Question:

I attended a show you did at Harpo’s in Detroit (a former movie theater turned concert hall, now a haven for touring D-list metal bands). I’ve seen you three times since in Michigan, at three different venues, and you mentioned Harpo’s, most often in your song “Trouble in Paradise.” Do you actually remember Harpo’s? I assume you used local venues in that song in each of your tour stops.
Joe S.

Answer:
Of course I remember Harpo’s. How could I forget? Harpo’s and several other similar clubs kept us alive until we managed to get a hit record. Lots of great memories there.

Question:
How stoked are you that you have not one but two songs in the new Deadpool movie? Where does that rank in your accomplishments of your outstanding career?
Chris Fraker – Nashville, TN
Answer:
Embarrassingly, I had never heard of the film (mostly cause I don’t watch much since I lost my hearing), but the reaction from my friends, kids, and show biz connections was amazing, so I’m very grateful to the music supervisor!

September 16, 2024
Question:
I must admit, back in the 1980’s I didn’t pay much attention to Huey Lewis and the News, though I did own the Fore! album on cassette. But here it is almost 40 years later, and I’ve just discovered “Workin’ for a Livin’”. My mind is blown. The video of you all at such a young age was so fun to watch! The videos of the live performances are equally great. But I think what has me obsessed with this song is the pure energy in the drum part. So in comparison to your top hits, how does this one rank in the band’s eyes? (I still don’t understand how this one didn’t make it to #1.)
Bebe S.
Answer:
Well, we ended the show with “Workin’” for most of our career so I’d say it was a fairly important tune !! The band always felt it was one of our signature songs. – Bill Gibson

September 9, 2024
Question:
I was wondering, which song was the first song you guys wrote together? I have seen some concert clips online in which you mentioned it was “Some of My Lies”, but other times, it was “Trouble in Paradise”.
Cheers,
Randy Kwok
Answer:
Unfortunately, I don’t remember, but it’s one of the two. They were certainly the first 2 songs we wrote together.

September 3, 2024
Question:
I’ve always wondered, who was it that approached you about music for the movie Back to the Future? Were “Back in Time” and “Power of Love” the only two songs planned, or were there other songs that didn’t get finished or make the cut?
Sincerely, Polybius 223
Answer:
I’ve told the story a million times. It was Steven Spielberg, Bob Zemekis, Bob Gale, and Neil Canton who asked to take a meeting with us, and suggested the idea.

August 26, 2024
Question:
I read somewhere that you got a perfect score on your Math SAT—very impressive! Did your advanced quantitative skills ever come in handy in your rock and roll career? I would think maybe in negotiating a record deal or tallying up the earnings from a hit single? Please let me know so I can tell our high schooler that even rock stars think it’s important to pay attention in math class.
Scott
Answer:
All true, but I’m not sure how my math skills aided in my career, except to account for the revenue received, but hey, that’s important right?

August 19, 2024
Question:
I was born in 2002 and have been a huge fan for some years now. Independently, I became a huge Kenny Loggins fan and was blown away when I learned that you worked together on several occasions. Can you tell us a bit about your friendship/cooperation?
Greetings from Germany,
Linus
Answer:
As you know, Kenny is a great collaborator, and he suggested a chord progression, that I wrote melody and words to for our Fore album. Since then we’ve seen each other several times, usually at a music biz function of sorts. He’s a very nice guy, and very talented.
(*note: the song was “Forest for the Trees”)

August 12, 2024
Question:
I loved the song, “is it me.” Why was it not released as a hit?
Don Salice
Answer:
I don’t know. That was a record company decision.

August 5, 2024
Question:
Have you (either alone or with the News) ever thought of recording with a female artist?
Which female artists do you prefer?
What made you decide to move out to Montana?
Baci from Italy!

Phyllis Cindolo

Answer:
We cut I’M NOT IN LOVE YET with Wynona Judd.
Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedesco, and many more.
More cheese, less rats.

July 29, 2024
Question:
I just watched the Da Bois Podcast interview with you from last December. The podcaster hit on something that I have noticed for quite some time. Your music is all upbeat, positive, and happy, which is a large part of the reason why I love listening to HLN and watching your videos. Was this a conscious decision by you and the band, or is it just a natural outcome of the types of music that you love?
Janet
Answer:
The latter. Interestingly, the happiest music comes from the people who have little. Blues music is meant to help us lose The Blues … to celebrate in the face of adversity. And, that’s just the music I’ve always gravitated to.

July 22, 2022
Question:
All your albums are absolutely great but some have been recognized for their greatness more than others, obviously like Sports and Fore. I happen to think the Plan B is a great album that doesn’t get talked about enough. What album do you feel doesn’t get the love it deserves?
Todd B
Answer:
Our latest, WEATHER. I really think it’s our best work.

July 15, 2024
Question:
What are your five favorite records of all time? The ones you would take with you to a desert island.
Marco Galvagni – Rovereto, Italy
Answer:
Live at the Sands (Frank Sinatra with Count Basie)
Satch plays Fats (Louis Armstrong plays the music of Fats Waller)
Ella Fitzgerald, the Early Years (with Chick Web)
The Best of Little Walter
The Real Folk Blues Sonny Boy Williamson

But, if you ask me again, I’d probably change my mind.

July 8, 2024
Question:
I know former newsman Mario once said in an interview he auditioned for Foreigner before you guys formed. Did you or any other News members audition for other known bands as well?
Eric Senise
Answer:
I auditioned for Manfred Mann, in 1977, and a couple college bands before that. I’m pretty sure the other guys have auditioned for others. Johnny was with Sly Stone for a few years.

July 1, 2024
Question:
You enjoy both flyfishing and reading. I’m wondering if you have read Norman Maclean’s “A River Runs Through It” about fly fishing, along with two short stories in the same volume. All three stories are set in your neck of the woods.
Best regards,
Janet R.
Answer:
Of course, and I recommend them to everyone. Thanks for mentioning them.

June 24, 2024
Question:
What was the first song that you sang that you heard on the radio, and where were you when it came on? Were you elated and did your heart rate increase?
John Melvin Parnell
Answer:
We all gathered at my house in Marin for a listening when KFRC added our record and then announce that they were going to play it that afternoon. It was surreal to hear it. I remember it almost sounded like someone else (I attribute that to the compression those powerful top forty stations used), and it sounded like a hit!

June 17, 2024
Question:
Which song have you felt most emotionally attached to, and the reason behind that particular song?
Maria Campbell – Healesville, Vic, Australia
Answer:
Maybe “Walkin’ with the Kid” cause I wrote it about my son, but also Power of Love for the same reason.

June 10, 2024
Question:
Did you ever think your “Cruising” duet with Gwyneth Paltrow would turn out so good? And who would you have liked to have done a duet with? I’m a DJ on a local radio station in the UK and I play at least one of your tracks every day.
John Bailey
Answer:
Good question, and no, I didn’t. But, having said that, the record was produced by Larry Klein, and he’s very talented and gets a lot of the credit for a very modern arrangement.

June 3, 2024
Question:
I recently found an old copy of Videowest featuring a version of “Sooner or Later” that is different than the album mix (btw, this was my first intro to HLN!). Was there something about that mix (and the video) you didn’t like resulting in an audio and video re-recording for the first album?
Greg Argendeli

Answer:
Wow. That’s very interesting. We’d love to see that or maybe get a copy. That would have to be our demo which we rerecorded for our first album. We’d love to hear that. Maybe Michelle can communicate with Nina?
* note: Original demo version of “Sooner or Later” (later titled “Some Of My Lies Are True (Sooner or Later)” was used for the first version of Videowest’s video (filmed at Ocean Beach, San Francisco) and can be seen here.

May 27, 2024
Question:
Being a Marin brat myself, I often wonder whatever came of Uncle Charlie’s and the woman (Jeanie?) who pulled the levers? Shortly after I graduated from college, I was hired to work the front door. You and a smattering of band members would frequent the establishment. I’d be honored for you to share a couple memories of what Uncle Charlie’s meant to you (and the band?)
Mark B.
Answer:
Good question. I think I heard Jeannie and her husband moved to Florida, or maybe just southern Cal. Uncle Charlie’s was our workshop, and I remember it fondly even though there wasn’t much there. We wrote a lot of our songs and debuted them there.

May 20, 2024
Question:
Is there a particular song that you loved that didn’t do as well in the charts as you thought it would?
Kathy Schwabenlender – Charlotte, NC
Answer
“But It’s Alright” from our album “4Chords and Several Years Ago” showed great early promise but sputtered when the record company collapsed and everyone got fired.

May 13, 2023
Question:
I recently revisited your complete discography with The News and not too long after, watched the film “American Psycho” for the first time in several years. When I paid more close attention to Patrick Bateman’s monologue about the band’s career, it appeared to me to be an accurate take on your music. Would you agree with that assessment and what are your feelings on being represented in such an iconic film and book? Thank you ever so much.
Nicholas Malfitano – Philadelphia, PA
Answer:
Yeah, he clearly had listened more than a little. But what he couldnt have known is that our best album would be our latest “Weather”!!!

May 6, 2024
Question:
How was it working with Roger Daltrey and Niko Mastorakis in .com for Murder? And how did you come across that role for the film?
Harry Acton
Answer:
I never saw them. I did that as a favor.

April 29, 2024
Question:
I love the video, “If This Is It” and I love how the guys allowed themselves to be buried in the sand, which I’m sure was miserable for them after while. How long were the guys buried in the sand for the shoot of that sequence, and did they beg to get dug up? Is there a funny story behind this?
Liz Landes
Johnny: As I’m sure Sean and Bill will attest, the heat and sand wasn’t so bad (we were actually in a pit, not buried!) but the black flies and sand gnats were intolerable!!!!! The moment we finished a take, a whole crew would charge in with towels and fans, smith the sand, and charge back out for another take. How many takes? I must have blocked that part out!!!
Bill: I recall it was pretty toasty. We sat on wooden boxes in a big hole dug in the sand, with plywood covering the hole and cutouts around our necks.
I remember it being hot, and between every take the makeup folks had to come in and blot the sweat away and fix some of the guy’s makeup. Not really any funny stories about it , but the finished video was proof positive that the gag worked!

April 22, 2024
Question:
I grew up in San Francisco during the 80s. My dad (who lived in Sausalito during the 70s) would often tell me you can be found having drinks at The 2AM Club, Mill Valley. I’ve never been to The 2AM Club and don’t know if he was being funny or being serious. I wanted to ask… were you a regular at The 2AM Club?
Tyler
Answer:
I’ve been there enough over the years to be thought of as a regular, but in truth we also hung out at a bar across the street called The Brothers.

April 15, 2024
Question:
I saw Clover at the Hammersmith Odeon. You were the support band. But for which headliner?
PS. I also saw you there with the News & I sneaked in my camera. I have some great pics of you taken from the balcony.
Alan
Answer:
ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL

April 8, 2024
Question:
I’ve always wondered. Was Mario’s mister cool and chilled image with the cigarette always hanging out of his mouth the genuine man or was it a caricature?
Surely no one can be that hip!
Jeremy
Answer:
Ha ha. You’ll never know, and that’s the beauty of it right? That’s up to Mario. I’m not sure myself.. but, Mario was always very hip.

April 1, 2024
Question:
I’m a 42 year old lifelong fan and music fanatic in general and I still prefer listening to entire albums/LPs when I consume music much of the time. I’m woefully undereducated when it comes to blues, but recently checked out James Cotton after hearing your drop his name in a podcast and was blown away. Can you recommend some albums in that vein (or any other you think should be mentioned) for me to start down the rabbit hole?
Thanks and best wishes, Andrew Jenco
Answer:
Sure. Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Big Walter Horton are the big 3 for me. All harmonica players like James Cotton who was mentored by Sonny Boy.

March 25, 2024
Question:
I’m going to see Tower Of Power live this summer! What’s your favorite song or memory with them?
Janelle
Answer:
So many great memories … London, Paris, Oakland Coliseum 4 nights etc.
Also, hard to pick one song. I’ve always loved THIS TIME ITS REAL.

March 18, 2024
Question:
During one of your concerts you mentioned we would hear from your roommate, Billy Gibson – did you always room with Billy when you were on the road? Or, did you fellows change it up & room with someone different every time you were on tour? Ok, tell the truth, did Billy snore?
Kim
Atlanta, Ga
Answer:
Yes, Billy and I always roomed together, and he never snored, or at least I never heard him!

March 11, 2024
Question:
Did you guys ever cover a Christmas song like some artists do?
Tom
Answer:
We recorded an accapela version of Winter Wonderland, and sent a Xmas cassette to some of our newsliner fans years ago, but that’s the only Xmas song we ever recorded. Thought about doing a Xmas album, but couldn’t find a way to make it special.

March 4, 2024
Question:
Along the lines of the “They All Come to Suzie” question, what about “Running with the Crowd” also from 1980? The sax solo’s great, and it sounds very much like Huey Lewis and the News. Was that your song? Could it/should it have gone on an album, in hindsight?
Cheers from London, Matt
Answer:
Yes, it was our song, and perhaps should have been on an album. I’m not sure why we never released it.

February 26, 2024
Question:
Just watched the Netfix Documentary you posted on your site “The Greatest Night in Pop”. I have 2 questions on it. Your band was the only full band that was there, did you make that happen, or were The News the only full band to get an invite? And was your line done in only 2 takes as it was shown? That looked like a brutal recording session!
Eric Senise
Answer:
Actually the Jacksons were also there (Jackson 5), but our manager Bob Brown convinced them to do that.

February 19, 2024
Question:
I have been a huge fan for many years and saw you in concert in Grand Rapids, Mi. I recently purchased an album by Southern Pacific and you play harmonica on a couple of songs. That was during your peak years with the News. How did you find time to do that and how did that come about?
Jim Leonardo
Answer:
John McFee, who was a founding member of South Pacific asked me. He was a fellow band member in Clover before that, and was instrumental in helping me get in the business to begin with.

February 12, 2024
Question:
I just finished watching the Greatest Night in Pop on Netflix. I noticed everybody at one point getting each other’s autographs on the sheet music. Did you get one? Do you still have it? What an incredible experience. Would you say that was one of the best / most thrilling nights of your life?
Michelle
Answer:
Yes, I have a script, but only got a couple autographs. Was too intimidated. Definitely one of the most thrilling nights of my life, yes.
Question:
Who would you say were you most intimidated by?
Answer:
Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.

February 5, 2024
QuestionDo you remember back about or around 1979 in Hawaii (Honolulu) being out on a raft all day and meeting some guy. We talked all day and you invited to meet you in the lobby. We took the bus to the concert. I had a great time. Do you remember this at all.
Jeff
Answer:
Unfortunately, no. But, then, I don’t remember much about yesterday. I’m sure it happened.

January 29, 2024
Question:
Your music is the soundtrack of my life. My daddy was in the navy and he’d go away on deployment but when he would come back we got to listen to Huey tapes again. We’d sit in our Astro van, in the San Francisco Traffic, and make my dad start Heart of Rock N Roll and we would giggle hysterically when the music finally really hit after the crescendo of the heart beat. I was five years old. My dad is six months older than you, and you both helped raise me in your own ways. Im a singer and public school music teacher now. Thank you for the memories.
My question: What is a specific song that brings back that special type of memory for you?
Sam
Answer:
Cool story. Thanks for your kind words. Early James Taylor songs like “Fire and Rain” bring back big memories for me, as do a couple big band jazz standards my father used to love, like “Alright, Ok, You Win” from Count Basie

January 22, 2024
Question:
I have noticed that Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of “I Want A New Drug” being “I Want A New Duck.” I personally find it funny, but I’m curious if you were ever hesitant to allow it. And what your opinion is on the song?Jacob
Answer:
I also thought it was funny.

January 15, 2024
Question:
I saw many of your shows. Amazing fun! One of my favorites was at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park when you guys were touring incognito as “The Sports Section.” Whose idea was this and how did you get everyone to agree to it? Brilliant.
Jim Alexander
Answer:
The idea was to road test some new songs in a small venue before we recorded them. It was also fun playing such an iconic venue.

January 8, 2024
Question:
I’m going to see Tower Of Power live this summer! What’s your favorite song or memory with them?
Janelle Tubbs
Answer:
Tough question. There are so many. I’m going to go with “This Time It’s Real” as my favorite song. There are too many good memories to mention. We worked with the horn section for more than 2 years. Touring Europe was especially great. Enjoy their show … they still sound great.

January 2, 2024
Question:
First off … huge fan … still have my Sony cassette with Auto Reverse that I repeatedly played Sports on! I wanna know what harmonica you played. I know it was a Dannecker …. But 10 or 12 hole? The 12 hole is for Jazz … so I could see you going that way as well as the 10 hole for blues , rock , country, and folk. Think you did the 10 hole. Trying to get my hands on a Dannecker … not much luck … lol.
Gary Carroll
Answer:
10 hole diatonic Dannecker. I played chromatic harp on a couple things, but the diatonic harp is much more expressive, and the beauty of it is the ability to “bend” notes.

December 18, 2023
Question:
What did you think when Weird Al asked to do a parody of I Want a New Drug?
Michael Gross
Answer:
I was flattered.

December 11, 2023
Question:
One of my favourite HLN albums is “Four Chords And Several Years Ago”, as I love your interpretation of those classics (and got introduced to some songs I didn’t know before). I remember there was also a video released, and I was wondering if that might see a re-release on DVD (at least). I missed out on that tape, though I do have all your albums. Kind regards and all the best from Germany.
Juern
Answer:
Yes, that was a video of a live performance at the Public Broadcasting Service in Chicago. I believe we own that video, and I will now endeavor to find where you may be able to see it.

December 4, 2023
Question:
I was recently introduced to the music of Little Feat through my husband and became a fan myself. After seeing them live last year, they reminded me so much of your shows. (I’m a sucker for a good horn section.) Other than both bands using the Tower of Power horns in the past, is there any other connection?
Marcie – Las Vegas, NV
Answer:
I’m flattered by the comparison. They are one of my favorite bands. We worked together a few times and got to know them a little … great guys, and great players.

November 27, 2023
Question:
Are there any albums you would go back and change or do something different for them?
Sarah
Answer:
Yes. All of them! Mostly just little things, but when making a record, you never really finish, you just run out of time!

November 20, 2023
Question:
Hello, I’ve been a huge fan of yours since the mid-eighties and never tire of listening to the entire back catalogue of your music. I was wondering if you could explain the reasoning for not including ‘They all come to Suzie’ on any of your albums? I personally think it’s a banger of a song, and it’s one of my long term favourites of yours.
Scott Webster
Answer:
It was a mistake … should have put it on one of our records.

November 13, 2023
Question:
My husband and I recently had the pleasure of sharing a Scottish breakfast with Warner E Hodges. I was wearing a Huey Lewis and the News t-shirt, which he complimented. He told us you’d given him the best piece of career advice he’d ever been given……..his band had supported you at a very early stage of their career and he said their set one night ‘truly sucked!’ He was gutted, but you came to see him and told him sometimes you’re shit, but keep going because the next time you won’t be!! So my question for you is this…What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career, and who gave it to you?
Trish – Northern Ireland
Answer:
Elvis Costello’s manager, Jake Riviera, articulated a strategy for how to deal with record companies; “Infiltrate, and then double cross”. It’s a funny line, but the upshot is, listen to everyone, but trust your own instincts finally.

November 6, 2023
Question:
I’m a 42 year old lifelong fan and music fanatic in general and I still prefer listening to entire albums/LPs when I consume music much of the time. I’m woefully under-educated when it comes to blues, but recently checked out James Cotton after hearing your drop his name in a podcast and was blown away. Can you recommend some albums in that vein (or any other you think should be mentioned) for me to start down the rabbit hole?
Thanks and best wishes, Andrew Jenco
Answer:
Sure. Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and Big Walter Horton invented blues harmonica (Cotton learned originally from Sonny Boy) and all their records are good. James Cotton, Junior Wells, Paul Butterfield, Charlie Musselwhite are probably the best known 2nd generation harp players, and there are a number of modern guys who are great … and that’s just harmonica players. Enjoy.

October 30, 2023
Question:
I’ve enjoyed building up my HLN vinyl record collection and now have most of the albums. I only can’t seem to find Plan B though. Was it ever released as a vinyl?
Thank you
Suraj Maraj
Answer:
I have no idea, but I think so … Universal Music?

October 16, 2023
Question:
Did you ever consider making a double LP? And if so, do you think it would have been a concept album? “Small World” is slightly something like that, as most of the songs are touching a “living together, at best in harmony” topic.
Niklas Nowak
Answer:
Not really. Ten original tunes is enough of a challenge.

October 9, 2023
Question:
When you were in Europe playing your harmonica, how many different countries did you travel to, and were you stuck eating rubbish food?.
Scott Fowkes
Answer:
All the countries of Western Europe. The food was excellent.

Some of my favorite tracks were on Time Flies. Will you ever release digital version of 100 Years from Now, Til the Day after and When the Time has Come?
Glen

I agree. And, I love some of that. I wasn’t aware that digital versions weren’t available. I’ll try to check. Thanks.

September 18, 2023
Question:
Have you ever been to Graceland? If so, what’d you think? Are you an Elvis fan?
Janis Rudolph – New Milford, NJ
Answer:
Yes. I thought it was a little weird, although I am a huge Elvis fan.

September 11, 2023
Question:
I have always loved your music. What song did you do a video that had a scene in a weight room? My brother was in the scene and I would love to show it to his nieces and nephews, my children, but I cannot remember which song/video it was. I would greatly appreciate you answering my question.
Anonymous
Hey, Anonymous … I have no ideas.
(note: I believe the video you are referring to is “Couple Days Off.” – Michelle)

September 4, 2023
Question:
Hi there. I’m obsessed – none of us can remember who was the headliner at Oakland Coliseum, late 70s, when Huey & American Express opened. We were blown away. Enough that we’re not sure who you opened for. Bob Seger? Doobies? Boston?
Cheerio, and thanks.
Anne
Answer:
Never played Oakland Coliseum in the 70’s that I can recall. We spend for Kenny Loggins at the Greek Theater in the late 70’s.

August 28, 2023
Question:
A question from a Scottish fan.
I saw you & the band at a gig in Glasgow, Scotland many years ago. Fab!
I know you’ve also been to Scotland in your youth/younger days.
Have you ever been called “Shug” or “Shuggie”? This is quite a common derivation of “Hugh” here.
June
Answer:
Absolutely. All the guys in Thin Lizzy called me “wee Shug”, or “wee shuggie.”

August 21, 2023
Question:
I was born in 1974 and I have been a HUGE fan since Sports. Needless to say, when Back to the Future came out, it was instantly my favorite movie and I have held both the movie and the band closely as my favorites of all-time. My question to you is, what is your favorite movie and band? Thanks for being there my whole life when I need a pickup.
Don Warling
SFC, US Army Retired
Answer:
Impossible question cause I like so many, but I loved “The Last Picture Show”, “Wag the Dog”, and a small independent film called “Into the West”, and so many others. As for bands; Tower of Power, Little Feat, Tedeshci Trucks Band, Neville Brothers and others.

August 14, 2023
Question:
I’m a huge fan of Reba. Loved the video for “Is there life out there.” What was it like working with her?
Diana Hudson
She was terrific. During the breaks, we sang, and I played harmonica … had a ball.

July 31, 2023
Question:
Perfect World video…Just curious where that video was filmed. Looks like the landfill in Granda Hills area.
Anonymous
Answer:
Landfill in Novato, California, the owner of which lived across the street from our manager. I love that video.

July 24, 2023
Question:
One of my all time favourite news tracks is “It Hit Me Like A Hammer.” That song was co-written with Mutt Lange and I’ve always been curious, is that an idea/hook you had been working on for a while and you took to him for help finishing or did Mutt Lange bring the idea to you? While the song was a solid hit, hitting Top 25 on the Hot 100 and Top Ten on A/C, I honestly think had it come out in ‘89 instead of ‘91, it would have been another monster hit for you guys. Such a perfect catchy summer tune and is quite possibly the most underrated single from the whole News catalogue.
Alex
Answer:
The song was all Mutt. I think I rewrote some of the lyrics.

July 17, 2023
Question:
I have always enjoyed the songs where the 49ers were singing backup vocals. What is the story behind that? Did the 49ers approach you, or did you reach out to them? In addition to “I Know What I Like” and “Hip to be Square” – were any other tracks considered?
Bret Ellsworth – Saratoga Springs, Utah
Answer:
We met Joe and Dwight at a Bay Area Music award show, and Joe jokingly offered to let me take some “snaps” if I would let them sing on a song. We took him up on it, although I never got the snaps.

July 10, 2023
Question:
What was the most fun video you guys ever did?
Ray Begin
Answer:
Probably, Stuck with You cause we had 4 days in the Bahamas, but we had a lot of laughs doing “Heart and Soul”.

July 3, 2023
Question:
I remember the Sports album having the same popularity of a “Frampton Comes Alive” with what seemed like everyone had a copy of it. “If This Is It” is my all-time favorite HLN song.
When the album was finished and ready to be released, did you and the band have an inkling of the success it would have?

Johnnie Parnell
Answer:
No idea. Although record promoter and soon to be Michael Jackson’s manager, Frank DeLeo told me at a listening party we had in New York; “Don’t worry … you’re gonna be ok”.

Question:
What was your take on 1980s MTV? Did you watch any of it back then? Did the band create your music videos with MTV in mind? Do you think MTV contributed to your band’s success?
Peter Skiera
Answer:
MTV was huge in the early 80’s. Of course we all had to suddenly make videos for the singles. We tried to have fun, be funny, and avoid a literal translation of the song … to, sort of, stay out of the tune’s way, if you know what I mean. And, yes, MTV was important to our success. I like to think that we’d have done well anyway, but MTV certainly helped break us.

Question:
The video of Perfect World is very unique as there very few bands shooting a video in a garbage dump except Kiss’ “Lick it Up” and The Police “Synchronicity II”. Where did the concept come from? It is a shame that Small World was not better received. I think by this point, your fans were with you regardless.
Roger Zeidman
Answer:
I confess the idea was mine. I still think it’s one of our best videos, and I agree that it’s a shame Small World wasn’t better received. Stan Getz’s solo on Small World still makes my hair stand on end.

Question:
Working with Thin Lizzy, what was one of your favourite memories of working with Phil and the lads?
Richard
Answer:
I have so many great memories of Phil. I think my favorite ones are from the studios in Compass Point in Nassau, and the Record Plant in Sausalito where we endeavored to cut new songs with him just before he passed. He was a mentor to me, and I learned everything I know about being a “rock star” from him.

Question:
“Change of Heart” is a special song to me, as it in my opinion, illustrates what was about to come for you and your band: It’s rocky and powerful, yet it’s also catchy and revolves around the topic of love, which is so essential in the bulk of your songs. Do you remember how the song and the lyrics emerged?
Niklas Nowak
Chris and I wrote that song together. I think he had the progression, I wrote the lyric and we collaborated on the melody. I really like that song also. We opened our live show with that tune for a long time.

Question:
I love how you were an early advocate for Stevie Ray Vaughan’s enormous talent. Is there any footage (audio or video) of him playing “Bad is Bad” with HLN on that tour that might see the light of day?
Shawn Streifel
Answer:
I don’t know, but I’m thinking there must be somewhere although that was a little before sophisticated cell phones.

Did you ever sing “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” by Elvin Bishop? To me, the song has a HL&TN vibe.
Thanks,

No, but I agree that it has an R&B vibe like many of our songs. Micky Thomas sang that song well. He’s a really good guy.

Mike Karwisch

I didn’t get it either. Bill is as good as they come.

Question:
Hi Huey, here a long time fan from Argentina. In the early 80’s we lived during a military dictatorship. Like any totalitarian regime, they applied censorship and modified some song titles, softening them. When Sports arrived, I want a new drug was printed on LPs and Cassettes as I want a new drug (called love), a line that is neither in the song nor in the title of the American edition. I saw it happen in other countries as well. What did you think of this modification and did you participate in the decision or was it entirely up to the companies?
Jorge Drot de Gourville
Answer:
Actually, CBS did the same thing in America on the single. (I Want A New Drug (called love)

Huey, on your famous sunglasses that were in your iconic videos and a multitude of promo shots and posters, what brand were they? They don’t look like Ray Bans. I know you lost a pair on the boat filming I Want A New Drug video!

Question:
Forest for the Trees is one of my favorite deep cuts from the studio albums of the 80s/90s. I’ve always wanted to know the background on this tune and what the intention was with it. It’s too good to be “filler” but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a single. Can you give some background on the genesis of this tune and what you remember about recording it?
Chris Jones
Answer:
“Forest” was written by Kenny Loggins and myself. The lyric was inspired by a letter I received from a confused young fan who contemplating his demise, but, was dissuaded and helped by our music.

March 27, 2023
Question:
I heard that you were going to do a solo album in the early 90s but the project was scrapped. Any reason why? I know some songs like “100 Years From Now” and the first release of “So Little Kindness” were written for the album but were there any more songs that were never released?
Ricky
Answer:
The truth is, no one was really knocked out by the results. Most of the songs were written by Chris Hayes and myself, and attempted to show some more serious and sophisticated material, and people don’t expect that from me. That said, we have used 3 or 4 of the ideas from that record and rewritten some.

March 20, 2023
Question:
I’m a Canadian fan in New Brunswick, over on the east coast. In high school we used to have lip synch “shows” where students would impersonate their favorite (then ‘80s) group in the auditorium, a theatre-style setting. That’s one of my great memories and your group was among those portrayed (Walking on a Thin Line). My question is about your great vocals, I wondered if you ever had lessons or is it natural ability, when you belt out those big powerful notes like in “Sometimes, bad is bad” and “Hip to be square”? Take care Huey.
Jeff Kelly
Answer:
Thanks for your kind words, Jeff. It’s all just natural with me. I did go to a vocal coach early in my time with Clover (we all did), but I only attended one session.

I suspect not. Of course we’ll never know, but the year off was a enlightening, and showed me a new path.

Question:
One of my favorite shows was Hot In Cleveland. You were a highlight in the series. How was it playing your character, Johnny Revere, and working with the great ladies, Wendie Malick, Betty White, Valerie Bertinelli and Jane Leeves?
Regards and best wishes, Alba
Answer:
It was really fun. They are all great ladies, and the show was very well written. I got to act in the very last episode (a double episode), and had a dressing room next to Bob Newhart. Got to act and hang out with Bob and Betty White for 2 weeks.

February 20, 2023
Question:
Hello. I like the production on your albums (for instance, the rhythm guitar sounds on Picture This) and admire that you produced so many of them. Did any of you have specific production influences or favorite producers, whether they were producing themselves or others? And do you have an opinion of the trend in the Eighties of engineers increasingly becoming producers (at least in certain genres)?
Jeff Falk
Answer:
We were more a fan of certain records, rather than the producers, but certainly recognized great producers. I worked with Mutt Lange in my previous band (Clover), and he might be the most successful producer of the last 30 years. I learned a lot from him, and we’re still friends today.
The trend of engineers becoming producers makes sense when you consider the technological advances and who is most apt to take advantage of them. Today pro-toolers are the most important and most in demand.

February 13, 2023
Question:
I am a longtime fan and have seen you several times in concert. There is nothing better than seeing you and The News perform your music live. I have had the opportunity to meet you once and I cannot begin to tell you the positive impact that you have had in the most difficult times in my life. Thank you for that. How did the advancements in technology change your approach to writing music over the years if at all? Did you approach your debut album differently than you did your latest release Weather?
Keith Tozlian

Answer:
Yes. Our debut album was simply “captured” in the studio. Our Sports album was cut with more technology (some drum machine and synthesizers), as was Weather.

Question:
I read where you describe music as sounding like a “cacaphony” in your head now. My question is: Does that apply only to music where there are several instruments playing at once and, if so, could you still sing those wonderful multi-part harmonies acapella?
Donnita
Answer:
I can sing by myself, but I can’t hear pitch well enough to sing TO anything. So, no, I couldn’t sing with the boys acapella.

Question:
Hi! I’m 24 years old, you are one of my favorite artists. I’m finding this age at this time to be so strange. What was being 24 like for you? If you could talk to younger Huey, is there anything you would tell him? Have your priorities changed over time with perspective?
Margaux

Answer:
Great question. At 24, I was playing music 6 nights a week in clubs. I was laser focused on trying to make a living playing music. If I could have told a young Huey anything, it would be to relax and enjoy
the journey because it work out.

Does anyone in your camp still have access to the recordings of “Heart of Rock and Roll” where you give a shout out to other cities? Specifically I’d love to hear the St. Louis one.
Mike Sieli
Answer:
We don’t, and never have. The record label (Chrysalis, then) would, but who knows where they’d be, and, since they are analog, even if they would play without being baked or treated someway. I suspect that there’s some 2-tracks of them somewhere in the Universal Music Vault.

Is there a genre of music that you like to listen to that most people wouldn’t have guessed? How about any up-and-coming artists that interest you?
Brandon Lutz
Answer:
Unfortunately, I can’t hear music anymore. Since I lost my hearing 4 1/2 years ago, I can’t enjoy music. It’s cacophony. But, I used to love to listen to jazz. Straight ahead jazz. From Old Big Band, to Bop.

Huey, Bill, and co.,
I’m a writer and author near Washington, DC, and am working on a major biography about Creedence Clearwater Revival to be published by Hachette Books next year. In my interviews with the band, I was told that they used to play football with Clover in SF in 1972–and that Huey broke his collarbone in one of these games. Can someone confirm this detail? It’d be a good one to include if it’s accurate. Thank you!

All true. I was trying to cover Doug Clifford on a pass play.

Unfortunately, my favorite acting moments ended up on the cutting floor. Gwenyth Paltrow and I had 4 or 5 scenes cut from the film “Duets” because it was too long, and 2 of them were my favorite.

Question:
Hey Huey, I’ll tread lightly here with this question. You said you didn’t want to do music for Ghostbusters and you didn’t. What was it about Back to the Future that you liked enough to provide two songs for?
Sam Bennett

Answer:
It was all about timing. The Ghostbuster song was proposed right in the middle of our Sports album’s long run. We were busy on the road, and they wanted the song to be called “Ghostbusters” which I wasn’t fond of. BTTF wanted any original song with no parameters, and the timing was perfect for us. It was between albums, and bought us some time to write.

Well, it’s a mute point now that I’ve lost my hearing. But I’m a big fan of George Strait, and I have a couple countryish songs that I’d love to hear him sing.

Question:

After the smash success of Sports, I was mind blown with Fore back in the day. Outside of the rock numbers, “Whole Lotta Lovin’” and “Naturally” remain personal faves. 😉 Will Fore ever be given the deluxe remaster treatment like Sports was, and would there be any unreleased tracks or live material from that period that us fans may not have yet heard?
Thanks and cheers from Down Under,
Wardy
Answer:
It’s possible that Fore will get remastered at some point … I always wished we could remix it … it’s one of our only records not mixed by Bob Clearmountain and I’d love to hear his version.

Question:
Hi Huey. I recently bought a few of your albums on vinyl including the first album. I know it wasn’t a huge hit, but I quite like the album. Especially ‘Don’t Make Me Do It’. Unknown
Answer:
I’m not allowed to play favorites since I produced the record, but I quite like “Some of My Lies”, “Don’t Ever Tell Me That You Love Me”, and “Hearts.” “Some Of My Lies” video was shot at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, and “Don’t Ever Tell Me” was filmed at the Mountain Amphitheater on Mt. Tamalpais.

Question:
What is your impressions of the mashup of Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ and ‘Hip To Be Square’ ?
Maxwell

Answer:
I don’t like the fact that anyone can take “content” that has been conceived, accomplished (filmed and paid for), and then use it however they want without even consent, let alone compensation. I have nothing against Metallica, and, in fact, know and like both James and Lars, but I think the whole exercise is ridiculous.

Question:
Hello Huey, I’m 13 years old and I was wondering how you or the band members came up with “The News” as your name. Do you know who chose that name?
Sears

Answer:
I did. We were calling ourselves Huey Lewis and American Express, and just before the release of our first album, the record label got worried we’d be sued over the name. We had literally 24 hours to come up with a name, and The News was as good as we could do.

Question:
Did you play at the 1973 Tam High Prom on a Ferry Boat that left from Tiburon? If you did, was that Clover? The music grabbed me and I had to dance which I had never done before. If that was you, take credit for getting an introvert to break out and boogie. Haven’t stopped. (I am the guy who was in your brother’s class at Richardson Bay and at Tam. I think he sent you the picture of us on our teacher’s
sailboat on SF Bay in 1965-66.)
David Healy
Answer:
I’m not sure. I know HLN did a very early gig on the Ferry Boat, and, I do vaguely recall an earlier ferry gig with Clover, but the
truth is, I can’t remember…

Question:
Besides the News, what group/artist do you like listening to most from the 80s?

Question:
How involved are you and the band choosing each album’s singles? Would you deliver an album to the label and they’d go “Heart & Soul” is first, “Drug” second, or “Small World” instead of “Old Antone’s,” or whatever, or did you have any (or all) say?
James Kenney

Answer:
A little. Usually the label picks the singles, but it’s sometimes fairly obvious. It’s a strategy, of course, and sometimes they get it right (Sports), and sometimes get it wrong (Picture This, where “Workin’” should have been the 2nd single).

February 28, 2022
Question:
What I really liked about your concerts many years ago were your support groups.
I can remember Bruce Hornsby and the Range and Melissa Etheridge. Just wonderful.
Question: Did you choose these artists or was your management doing it?
Can you give me 2-3 others Singer/Bands names that impressed you?

We did. We also took Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Neville Brothers on national tours. Very proud of that.

February 21, 2022
Question:
Your talent and energy has affected and influenced so many people. I am in a Huey tribute and wondered why you don’t continue to pursue your harp playing during your battle with Meniere’s disease? You are truly one of the best harp players I have ever listened to. Also, been trying for some time to purchase a few harmonicas from Anthony Dannecker and his website just says, “coming soon.” Any advice on an alternative choice to Dannecker harmonicas?
Brian – Temecula, CA

Answer:
My hearing is so bad, I can’t find pitch … therefore, I can’t bend notes in tune. Harmonica is not like a piano. You need an ear to be in tune. Also, it’s a struggle … definitely no fun. Cacophony.

What year did you open for the Doobie Brothers at the Oakland Colosseum Arena?

Bill: 1980

Question:
I was listening to a live show from 1988 in Birmingham, England where you mention to the crowd that you were recording the show. My questions are what kind of live archive does HLN have and will we ever be able to hear these complete classic shows? The live cuts on the Sports 30th Anniversary bonus disc sound great and I think a lot of people would love to have access to complete shows from throughout your history available!
Chris Burke
Answer:
We have some stuff. Most is still in analog form, but Johnny is baking the tapes, and transferring it to the digital domain. Once we get that done, we can begin to assess what we have. I’m sure something will be available sometime. (Sorry if that’s a little vague.)

January 24, 2022
Question:
A few years back, I heard HLN in Raleigh, and that night Huey gave a ‘Tip of The Hat’ to beach music, which is sort of an R&B/Soul sub-genre that’s popular almost exclusively in the southeast. You guys do quite a few covers that would be considered in that genre (But It’s Alright, Never Found A Girl, It’s Alright, Green Grass and others). Being a west coast band, how did you discover Beach Music, and what can you add to the Beach Music story? That flavor of music certainly is a natural fit for the blue-eyed soul HLN is known for!
John Hackney – Wilson, NC
Answer:
I went to Prep School in New Jersey, and had a lot of southern guys as classmates. I always liked soul music, and after all, that’s what Beach music is. I still love the Tams, General Johnson, Clifford Curry, and all those great beach music bands.

Question:
I’ve heard Billy Joel mention on a few occasions that as a great piano player, he still wishes he could play the ivories…like his hero…Jazz Great…Oscar Peterson. As a great Harmonica Player, is there any harp player that you wish you could play more like?
Ben Kent
Answer:
Several. My hero was always James Cotton, but Howard Levy is probably the most accomplished harp (diatonic harmonica) player I’ve ever heard.

Question:
I was in university when “Sports” exploded. Did you know after recording the album how popular many of the songs would become?
Rob Christian
Answer:
I wish I had. I would have relaxed a little bit!

Question:
Performing a capella songs and being in amazing polyphonic sync, just like on “Naturally” or “Bad Is Bad”, has always been one of your greatest merits. I especially like your rendition of “So Much In Love” from the early 80s. What’s your favorite a capella song?
Niklas Nowak – Germany
Answer:
Not sure. I like “So in Love’ a lot, and always thought that “This is dedicated … to the one I love” would’ve been great acapella, but we never got around to working it up.

December 27, 2021
Question:
Hello! I’m in a debate with my mom right now about my first concert (you) and when it was. You guys played a free concert at Camp Pendleton with Sheila E. We conflict on what year that was (89 or 91). Do you happen to remember? You’ll settle a mother/daughter bet and we will forever be grateful (and fans). Thanks!
Julie Suarez
Answer:
You have to be kidding me. Julie, I’m much too old to remember that far back. Bill Gibson is the only guy I can think of who might be able to settle your argument. Sorry. – Huey
I couldn’t be certain . Lol Halsey could probably tell you. – Bill
I’d have to look in my basement as my computer only goes back to 1993. – Lol

December 20, 2021
Question:
My question is, as, unfortunately you currently aren’t singing. Have you consider collating some live releases from over the years to put out, either, preferably as a physical product?
Derek
Answer:
Quite possibly. We’re only now sorting through all that we have. We’ll see. Thanks for the impetus.

Question:
My daughter loves music and is interested in playing the harmonica. I figured I ask the best harmonica player I know, what harmonica would you recommend for her to start with? Also, I know that your Meniere’s Disease has severely limited your music capabilities, but are you able to still play the harmonica? BTW, love, love Weather!

Answer:
I play Dannecker harmonicas. I think they are by far the best commercial harmonica, but they are expensive. A Hohner Marine Band or Special 20 is a good harp to start with.

December 6, 2021
Question:
First I like to tell you I love your music I bought your new album Weather and absolutely love it. My most favorite song on the album is “Her Love Is Killing Me.” I was thinking why did you name the album Weather? Just wondering and sorry about your hearing loss hope your hearing gets better.
Andrew Stahl
Answer:
Huey Lewis and the NEWS … SPORTS … WEATHER.

Question:
I’ve noticed that starting from 2005 or so, you guys started performing Hip as “(Too) Hip to be Square.” Was there any reason for the name change?
Randy K.
Answer:
Good question. I originally wrote the song in the third person; “He used to be a renegade …etc.”, but thought it would be funnier (or more ironic) if I told it on myself. Some people took it as a kind of anthem for square people, and so I began to fool with the title.

November 22, 2021
Question:
In a few of your recent interviews, you had mentioned how “One of the Boys” is a song that describes your life, but I noticed that “Finally Found a Home” also seems to do the same. Is this the case?
Matt Zeugin – Valley Springs, CA
Answer:
Yes.

November 15, 2021
Question:
As a child of the 80s, I’ve always been a fan of the live “Trouble In Paradise” that appeared on the USA For Africa album. It’s a great song, a terrific performance, and the message is fantastic. The problem is, I’ve never figured out the final verse. “Five long years since I wrote this song, many people dying, so many gone.” What’s the next line after that? The lyrics I found online don’t make any sense, so I thought I’d go straight to the source.
George
Answer:
I was never happy with that line, and I would change it when we played it live. I tried a number of phrasing ideas, but, something like “I’ve said it before but it’s still good advice” …

November 8, 2021
Question:
I have heard the live versions of “Free Love” that were kicking around in 89 or so…what led you to bring in Nick Lowe and change up the song a bit? Did he mostly work on lyrics with you? Is the “Do You Love Me, or What?” line his?
James Kenney
Answer:
Nick had nothing to do with that tune. I can barely remember it! “Do you love me or what?” was my convoluted idea. I now look upon that tune as a good try!

October 25, 2021
Question:
Am I imagining this memory, or did baseball great George Brett sit in with the horn section at a show in the 1980s? Also, did you know Darrell Evans when he played for the giants?
Gabe – San Rafael, CA
Answer:
Yes, George “sat in” with the horn section pretending to play horn. We had a very late night that night (baseball was on strike), and then heard that baseball strike had just been settled about 1:00 AM. George got up earliesh the following day and went 5 for 8 in a double header.

\October 18, 2021
Question:
I was watching some clips of you guys singing the National Anthem, and it’s amazing how you all sang a fantastic acapella arrangement (especially your high notes!) in such a different environment from your shows. Was performing the anthem for a huge sporting event in a huge stadium a completely different experience than singing for a regular live show, or would you say it’s around the same?
Randy K – Sunnyvale, CA
Answer:
Similar, but different in that the song (Anthem) isn’t very “groovy”, and is therefore difficult, and the venue (stadium) is not the easiest to negotiate sound wise. But, it only lasts 2 minutes and we get great seats to the game!

October 11, 2021
Question:
I recently saw the cover for the 1965 Paul Butterfield Blues Band album and it reminded me of the Fore album cover. Was your photo a subtle reference to that influential album?
Jason Tresser
Answer:
No, it was a complete rip off. Good call.

Question:
I’d like to know if Huey and the band remembers appearing at an evening concert in a club in Chappaqua NY, next to the railroad tracks? I was still living in NY, so it had to be in 1980, since that’s when they started using the name Huey Lewis and the News. I had never heard of the band, but I went and stayed for the whole show. Six years later, I was at Camp Lejeune with the Marines, and would walk to the mall along the railroad tracks with Huey and the news on my walk-man cassette player giving me such positive vibes and a beat to walk by. I hear their tunes now, and it takes me right back, THANKS!
Paul Martinello – Somers, CT
Answer:
I almost remember that club gig. Meaning, I don’t really remember it specifically, but I do remember a small club near the railroad tracks from our Workin’ for a Living Tour in ‘82.

September 27, 2021
Question:
Who was better to jam with? Umphrey’s, Foo Fighters, or Grateful Dead?
Sean – Morton Grove, IL
Answer:
Silly question. Three great bands, wildly different, and all big fun to sit in with.

September 20, 2021
Question:
Huge fan since ‘Picture This’ came out. Wondering how you feel about tribute band’s performing your music?
Roger Langdon
Answer:
I’m flattered, and love to see the music live on, especially since I can’t hear well enough to sing anymore.

Question:
I found it interesting you list Newport as one of your favorite courses, mine too. It is interesting that when they were awarded the US Am that Tiger won they were told not to put in irrigation or they would lose the event. Have you ever played Fishers Island or played in Ireland? I was a teacher for 35 years and used “The Heart…” to introduce US Geography. Thanks for making my life happier.
James Doherty
Answer:
I have never played Fisher’s Island, although I know all about it. And, I’ve never played in Ireland, I’m embarrassed to admit, although I’ve had some fabulous times there.

Question:
In the summer of 1982, I stood inline behind Huey at JC Penny’s in Corte Madera Shopping Center. I approached Huey after his purchase and said “You’re Huey Lewis.” You were more surprised I knew you than I was at knowing who you were. Had a nice 5 minute conversation after which a lady came up to me and asked “Huey Newton and the who?” I told her Huey Lewis. Picture This had come out and you were just hitting it big. In our short conversation, I thought you mentioned a photo shoot for an album cover in which you and the News were “News Broadcasters”. Standing in front green screen, at the sports desk, etc. Was there ever such a shoot?
John Quinn
Answer:
It seems like there must have been, right? I mean, it’s an obvious idea. I do remember a shoot at Channel 7 in San Francisco, but it wasn’t for an album cover. I can’t remember what it was for, but it was around that time, so maybe that’s it.
*note: This photo can be found in the photo gallery “Early News” in the Photos section of this website.

Question:
I watched your interview on Jimmy Kimmel and enjoyed your stories so much! What I loved most was how music really served as an international language for you as you hitchhiked across Europe. Wondering, if you would consider writing a memoir?
Karen George
Answer:
I have, but it’s a lot of work, and I guess I’m lazy. Maybe one day.

August 23, 2021
Question:
Kudos to your band mate Bill for the recent heartfelt tribute to late drummer Neil Peart of Rush.
Rush also has a song titled ‘Jacob’s Ladder’. Have you heard it?
Darren
Answer:
I have not, unfortunately. And I won’t be able to until my hearing changes.

August 16, 2021
Question:
Did the 60’s band The Rascals have an influence on you? I would love to hear you cover “Groovin’” or “It’s A Beautiful Morning.”
Robert Wright
Answer:
Not really, but I loved them. I love Felix’s voice … great singer.

August 9, 2021
Question:
I enjoyed the Weather album, one of the real standouts is “Remind Me Why I Love You Again,” which is a real R&B funk jam. I’ve heard you guys touch on funk with “Attitude” and “Do You Love Me or What?” from Hard at Play, and Clover had “Chicken Funk.” Who are your funk influences?
Greg, Guatemala City
Answer:
It all started with James Brown and Sly Stone for me.

August 2, 2021
Question:
The song “Heart and Soul” starts out with the lyric “Two o’clock this morning”, my question is was this line inspired by the 2AM Club where the cover photo for Sports was taken?
Ryan Gray
Answer:
Unfortunately no. That tune was written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn.

Question:
I often was the ball boy when my father would umpire at Lawrenceville, and when I played at Notre Dame later would tell them you were the same guy that was the clutch player at L’ville. My father was a birddog for 2 or 3 scouts, SO the question is what happened at Cornell that you stopped playing and went to Europe…. baseball was who you were at Lawrenceville and you were looked at by plenty of teams.
Bruce Brown
Answer:
My father insisted I take a year off between high school and college and “bum around Europe” (his words). I was already playing harmonica, and after a year was determined to pursue music, so I never even went out for the team at Cornell.

Question:
How did you get from San Francisco to the Lawrenceville School? And then to Cornell— do feel you missed out on growing up in the Bay Area during the late 1960s by being on the east coast? Which circle house were you in at Lville?
John Henderson
Answer:
My father convinced me it was a good idea. I was in Hamill House. I didn’t miss much about the Bay Area as I was there all summer and vacations.

Question:
Huey, I have been a fan since when I was 7 years old. I’m now 13. My dad constantly had your cassette tapes in the car and we would listen to them. At school, I kept on banging the pencils against the table and they would break… (mainly your songs). I eventually got my first drum set (which was a kid’s set) on Christmas of 2014. I can remember using the drum set to mainly play your songs. Two questions: Why is the single version of NOW HERE’S YOU sound different than the one on the album and did you ever play IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME YOU’LL LET ME in concert?
Gregory – New Fairfield, CT
Answer:
I have no idea why the single sounds different than the album version. I’m guessing Bill Schnee who produced our first record did a remix for the single. And, yes, I believe we played IYRLYL live but only a time or two.

Do you remember those times when HLN performed at The Bodega Club in Campbell, CA (no longer exists) and another favorite, The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA, and when you guys would sing a capella at an after party in Carmel… “Under the Boardwalk”? A lot of years since those days have gone by but those are all good times and memories .
Julie – San Jose, CA
Answer:
Yes. Of course, I don’t remember any of those gigs as much as I once did, hahaha, but they were good times.

My all-time favorite film is “Back To The Future”. How long did it take in wardrobe and makeup to disguise yourself for your role as the band audition judge? It must have been a wonderful experience to work with that cast and crew. From a fan who will never think you’re “too darn loud”, thank you so much.
Nicholas Malfitano
Answer:
Not long. The scene was shot at night because Michael J Fox was working on a network show during the day, and BTTF had to be shot at night. Bob Zemekis, and Bob Gale were so great to work with, and Michael was and is a prince.

Question:
What can you say about the Small World recording sessions? Do you plan to make a deluxe version? It’s one of my favourite LPs from Huey Lewis & The News! And not only because you said some french word on a song on it!
Arnaud – Paris, France
Answer:
So glad to hear you like that record. I do too. I also think Stan Getz’s solo on “Small World Part 2” is brilliant. It was so great to work with him. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have split the song up into 2 parts. There is a single edit somewhere that we did, which is, I think, the definitive version of the song. BTW, “Small World” was awarded “worst album of the year” by Rolling Stone.

Question:
My question is why was the song “So Little Kindness” included on both “Time Flies” and “Plan B”? Was it re-recorded for “Plan B” and if so, why?
Jen Bosley – Philadelphia, PA
Answer:
We weren’t real happy with the Time Flies collection, and felt like “So Little Kindness” was lost on that record, and belonged on the Plan B record, so we re-recorded it. We own that master record (Plan B), and wanted SLK to be included.

Question:
Hi Huey, I am a great fan, and also a great fan of Phil Lynott. I know you guys recorded stuff together and have just istened to your version of The Boys are Back in Town (a great version by the way). My question is are there any plans to release the recordings that you and Phil did. Given the resurgence in all thigs Lizzy it would be a shame if they were not released for us all to enjoy?
Geoff Thompson
Answer:
Unfortunately, I don’t think so … the tunes were never finished … Phillip was hoping to return to finish up the vocals.

1) How did you get from San Francisco to the Lawrenceville School? 2) And then to Cornell— do feel youmissed out on growing up in the Bay Area during the late 1960s by being on the east coast? 3) Which circle house were you in at Lville?
John Henderson
Answer:
1) By airplane. 2) I was home summers, and I graduated Lawrenceville in 1967, and took a year off before college, so I got to experience plenty of west coast. 3) You mean there isn’t a plaque? Hamill.

Question:
Just heard “Back In Time” on the radio and I was wondering at what point in the film production process did you write the song. It clearly has direct reference to the story line of the film.
Pete West
Answer:
“Back in Time” was written after I saw a rough cut of the film. “Power of Love” was written before the film was shot.

Question:
“Give Me the Keys (And I’ll Drive You Crazy)” is one of my favorite songs from you and your band and my pick for most underrated. I adore the frenetic pace!! Was there any sort of inspiration or influence for writing the song? Was a music video ever made for the song
JL
Answer:
That phrase was coined by our assistant manager Steve Lewis (no relation), who unfortunately, is no longer with us. We did the rest, and yes, there was a goofy video done for the song.

May 3, 2021
Question:
One of my favourite songs released as a single is ‘World to Me’. I know it wasn’t one of the groups best selling releases and I was wondering why a video was never made for this song.
Jeremy Keane
Answer:
I’m not sure it was released as a single, but I agree with you, Jeremy. It’s one of my favorite tunes as well. It’s featured beautifully in our new musical “The Heart of Rock and Roll” which we hope to present on Broadway soon.

April 26, 2021
Question:
I have seen numerous concerts of yours, dating back to the 80’s when you toured with Tower of Power. That show was in Weedsport, NY, an outdoor venue at a dirt race track. One of my favorite concerts ever! I think my favorite part of all of the concerts was when you would do an a cappella song. What is your favorite song that you and the band did a cappella?
Jennifer in Alaska
Answer:
I suppose I’d have to say “They Say It’s Alright”, only because it was released on a Curtis Mayfield tribute album, was the single and was an adult contemporary hit.

April 19, 2021
Question:
With the announcement of the 7-song WEATHER, I was wondering about lost songs that have either been mentioned or appeared in the past. Whatever happened to the rest of the Back in Blue session songs, as well as songs like “Sell Out” “Just an Hour in Memphis” “You Hurt Me” (am I getting that title correct? From around 2008) “I’m Only In It For The Money” and any other lost songs? A b-sides and rarities release would be ideal for such treasures.
Jeff M – Asheville, NC
Answer:
Good question. I suppose most of them aren’t as good as we remember them, or as they should be, or they would have appeared on one of our albums, but it might be interesting to reconsider. I’ll give it a think. Thanks.

April 12, 2021
Question:
I was wondering: Did you give a lot of thought to the cover images of your LPs or was it usually a spontaneous endeavor? I am a big fan of “Picture This” (both the cover image AND the music, haha), maybe you could elaborate on the cover image of this one.
Niklas – Germany
Answer:
Nothing much to elaborate on. The record company wanted a close up of me for the cover, and I thought it would be cool if it was an enlarged shot of me as part of a group shot on the back, and the idea flowed from there.

Question:
I’ve been a fan for over 30 years and I’ve been to see you on nearly every UK tour. I briefly met you and the band a couple of times and those are special memories. I look on YouTube now and then to see if there is any footage of you and the band that I have not see before. Last week I found a clip of you and Phil Lynott on the UK TV show ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’, you were playing harmonica on one of his songs. I know that you were both great friends. What puzzled me though is that you were introduced on that show with a totally different name, not even your real name. I think the clip is from 1979. Were you going incognito, or was it some kind of inside joke?
Sally Hickling
Answer:
Probably trying to dodge the work permit thing. That was all Phillip and his manager’s doing.

Question:
I miss the music and the tours and continue to pray for a recovery and comeback. But in the meantime. Have you considered doing more voice work in animation? I know you have done puppy dogs pals. And that’s an Easter egg for parents I hope. No one can mistake that voice and the value attached. But I do hope that, in leiu of recording music, that you will lend your voice to more animated projects or just acting in general.
Cory
Answer:
From your lips to Disney/Pixar’s ears.

Question:
Thank you for all the joy you have brought in to the world! I first saw you live at the House of Blues in New Orleans in Feb (it was the first week of Mardi Gras) sometime in the mid 90’s I can’t remember exactly. The show was professionally filmed (big boom cameras, the works). It was a magical evening, one of the greatest shows I have ever seen! I have never been able to find it anywhere. Is it out there somewhere?
Tom Outwater
PS- Praying your hearing improves so we can have you back singing!!
Answer:
I think that may have been an in-house video that they had set up there, but it’s an interesting question. Perhaps they have it somewhere? Not sure.

Question:
Thanks for helping me grow up in the ‘80s! “Sports” was my fav album in middle school and I still listen to your 80s albums a lot. My question is about “We Are the World”. Were you in awe of anyone in the room? Either by reputation or maybe someone whose voice just knocked your socks off during the recording?
Mike Burman – Appleton, WI
Answer:
Ray Charles … I was so nervous, I couldn’t summon the courage to introduce myself to him. I just sort of shadowed him, just to be near the great man.

Question:
I’m a great fan of yours and I had the chance to enjoy your fantastic concert here in Rome in 1988. Don’t you know that you have lots of fans in Italy? What do you remember from that experience in 1988? How many times did you come to Italy and especially in Rome?
Fabrizio Galassi
Answer:
I remember everything about that show and the days before and after, because I have relatives in Rome who wined and dined me the whole time I was there. It was a wonderful trip only dampened by the sound in that huge stone dome. We’ve played Italy since, but not Rome. Go figure. I love Rome.

Question:
Can you talk about how you ended up working with the legendary San Francisco punk band Crime? It’s such an unlikely pairing, and I’d love to know how it came about.
Nate K.
Answer:
Patty Gleason, who managed Different Fur Recording where we had made our demos, suggested me to produce that record. It was fun. They were great guys and way more with the “scene” than I was … I actually learned a lot.

Hi!! Huge fan for more years than I care to admit because that would give away my middle aged status. I know you have a ranch in Montana and wondering what animals you have there? Are there livestock you prefer to raise and what breeds of horses do you like?

Answer:
We fall graze a few black Angus cattle, and we have 4 horses at the moment, 3 quarter horses and a warm blood that we inherited. But mainly we nurture the wildlife. Deer, Elk, ducks, geese, birds etc.

Question:
Would you ever attend a comic con with fellow BTTF cast members to meet fans and sign autographs?
Matt – Nottingham, P
Answer:
Sure, I mean after all, I am in show business, meaning I’ll do anything for attention or money, (usually in that order). But seriously, I’ve done a few BTTF reunions on TV and in Hollywood theaters, and it’s always fun. Michael J. Fox is a great and a very funny guy.

Question:
I have been a die hard fan since “Do You Believe in Love” came out back in 1982. You have had some awesome collaborations over the years with Tower of Power and a great duet with Gwyneth Paltrow. Do you have a bucket list of artists that you want to work with and who are they?
Ann Fisher
Answer:
I lost my hearing almost 3 years ago and haven’t sung with the band since …. I’m hoping I can one day regain enough hearing to sing with the band again.

Question:
I’ve been a fan for pretty much my whole life (and I’m 52). So first of all, thanks for creating such great music that has been the backdrop for some really amazing times in my life. My question is actually about golf. I was watching your shot from the 2019 Pebble Beach Pro-Am where you put it in from the greenside bunker, and I was curious what you consider the strongest part of your game is?
Bill Courtney
Answer:
Unfortunately, the word “strong” or “strongest”, and my game, have no reason to be in the same sentence. The best part of my game is my equipment.

Question:
Hi Huey! Did you ever have a percussionists by the name of Dave Rozelle on one of your tours in the 1980s. He became my drum teacher in 1992 and said he toured with you. Is this true?
Nate
Answer:
Huey: I don’t recall him, but then, nowadays I don’t recall much (!#!#). Bill would know.
Bill: We never had a Dave Rozelle play percussion with us but he may have been in a band that opened up for us ? Pete Esovedo is the only percussionist we ever had on tour. Cheers.

Question:
Starting with the tremendous success of Sports and the next couple releases, did you find that ‘making it’ added pressure to follow up with something just as successful, or did it give you more motivation to explore new creative territory that you might not have previously?
Mike Grzybowski – Phoenix, AZ
Answer:
Great question, and the answer is; both.

December 7, 2020
Question:
Huey, I’ve always been a fan of your music in movies. However, one in particular has always stood out to me; that being the part of “Hip to be Square” in American Psycho. I know how you originally did not like the use of it, but as time has gone on, have your thoughts changed at all? Personally for me it’s one of the things that got me listening to you in the first place!
Jack Skrump
Answer:
I had, and have no problem with the use of HTBS in the film. My outrage was a publicity stunt by the movie studio to get the film attention. The publicity department issued a press release on the eve of the release of the film that stated that I had seen the film, judged it too violent and pulled my song from the soundtrack … all made up. So, I boycotted the film and have still not seen it. I saw the musical (American Psycho) on Broadway, and loved it.

Question:
I am a college student with a major in music education. I love classic rock, and your music is very soulful and relaxing for me. My “Ask Huey” question is meant to address the arc of your career: How did the musical style of The News evolve over the years with the changes to rock/pop music? Were you looking to stand out from others?
Ryan Lueschen – Lakeville, MN
Answer:
Yes, we were looking to stand out from the others, but also making music based on the music we love … more R&B based. If our style has changed it’s because of creative decisions, not commercial ones.

Question:
I remember seeing you play at the Fresno Fair back in the early 90’s, and right in the middle of your set a bunch of pre-planned fireworks went off for about 3 or 4 minutes (ironically right during “Bad is Bad”). This made me wonder what was the most irritating or distracting thing that ever interrupted or happened during one of your concerts?
Bret Ellsworth – Saratoga Springs, UT
Answer:
Outdoor concerts with festival seating in 110 degree weather where I’m singing to the crowd and the medical people are pulling unconscious people over the fence … and, I’m singing a love song like “Do You Believe” … distracting.

I just finished watching “The Big Interview with Dan Rather.” Very good interview. But it didn’t cover how and/or why you started playing harmonica. Do tell.
Clarice

My mother rented a room to a folksinger named Billy Roberts (who wrote “Hey Joe” by the way), and he gave me a bunch of his old harps. My mother gave me a Bob Dylan record, and when I discovered Paul Butterfield, I was hooked.

October 19, 2020
Question:
I have always loved the energy at your shows! Thinking back specifically to seeing you live in the eighties and nineties, you jumped off of a lot of tall speakers and high platforms on the stage, and Chris used to run around like the energizer bunny…were there ever any mid-stage collisions or injuries associated with these antics? You guys always made it look seamless and fun, but I still don’t know how you could drop to your knees so quickly without popping a kneecap!
Anne Scheetz
Answer:
Yes there were some accidents. I broke my wrist when I fell off a stage in Northern California, and we used to bang into things (and one another) now and again. We were adhering to the advice of my mentor Phil Lynott concerning stage direction; “Move!”

October 12, 2020
Question:
My name is Sarah. I am 15 years old, I love your band, and I am probably your youngest fan. I have a few questions for you: Which music video were you in, that was the most fun to film? Did you travel to different places to film the music videos? If so, where are some places you have traveled to?
Sarah
Answer:
I have a 2 1/2 year old granddaughter who is a fan, so maybe you’re my 2nd youngest. My favorite video to film was probably “If This is It” cause we laughed the whole time. We’ve shot videos mostly in the Bay Area, but we did “Stuck with You” in the Bahamas, and a few in New York and LA.

Question:
Do you ever regret pulling out of Live Aid?
Jason – London, England
Answer:
No. I still think it was the right thing to do. Very little of the food or money from “We Are the World” got to the starving people and I think it was irresponsible to raise even more money with that as a back drop. Also, I argued with Bob Geldof who insisted that the concert would be “conscience raising”. I made the point that it would only be such if someone on stage kept the focus on the famine, which I think Bob did fairly well in London, but in Philadelphia, it was just a large rock concert.

Question:
With all your musical experience, knowledge and success in the business have you ever run across a musical talent that couldn’t catch a break but impressed you enough to help them get to the next level? If so, who was it?
Rob Harvey
Answer:
I’ve certainly championed many of the under appreciated artists like Bruce Hornsby, Mike Duke, Alex Call, Paul Thorn, and others. Several of them have gone on to big things, but I must honestly say very little of their success was my doing.

Sandra
Answer:
Probably. It was a long time ago, but my group CLOVER performed there so it’s extremely possible.

Question:
Your music has always been permeated by a great horn section. Therefore I was wondering: Have you been influenced by the music of Chicago (the band, not the city)? And if so, have you met some of the guys from the band and do you have a favorite Chicago song?
Niklas – Augsburg, Bavaria
Answer:
Not really, although I very much like them and have worked with them. We were more influenced by Tower of Power who were from the Bay Area as we were. Chicago has so many great tunes, it’s hard to pick one, but I’ll say “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is” because when we toured with them they let me sing it every night.

Have been a fan since age 12 or 13 when I heard Do You Believe In Love on WLS AM in Chicago when I woke up for school one morning back in the 80s. Have been to 12 or 13 of your shows around the Midwest over the years. The new live version of Jacob’s Ladder with the harmonica at the beginning and the long guitar solo is my all-time favorite. I finally heard it live at the Hammond, Ind., show earlier this year. Any chance of a studio or live version of the current Jacob’s Ladder being released in the near future?

No plans for a live recording as yet, but you never know.

Actually, I enjoyed it. The idea was for me to be almost unrecognizable, and uncredited as a kind of inside joke.

Steven Benjamin – Walnut Creek, CA
Answer:
Philip was a good friend, a mentor, and one of the best performers I’ve ever seen. I learned more from him than anyone else I’ve ever known. He was a great artist with a huge heart. I loved Philip, and still think of him often.

I am so thankful for having grown up on your music, I’m a life long fan! It not only takes me back but it’s just as relevant today with the exception of all you can eat prices for $1.99, lol. What brought you to the harp and how did you come to learn it? Praying for your hearing!!!
John Street – Pleasant View, Tennessee
Answer:
When I was about 11, my mother rented a room to a boarder who was a folk singer, and played harmonica. He gave me several of his old harmonicas, and my mother gave me a Bob Dylan album telling me the poets all loved this guy. That was the beginning for me.

No one ever got in touch with us, and I’ve never heard the song … but I will listen to it.

I don’t completely understand, but I’m sure it was a happy accident, although the melody is somewhat shaped by the guitar figure.

One of my favourite songs of yours is Trouble in Paradise, especially the version you sang in San Francisco in 1986. When I was listening to it I couldn’t help wondering what it was about. Love hearing from Rio! Embarrassed to say that we’ve not been there yet. Hopefully one day. I don’t really remember which address the video door was. As I remember, we made it all up … just a set, with a fake door, and a fake street.

Question:
Back in the 1980’s, my girlfriend at the time mentioned HLN “must have been influenced by Jimi Hendrix.” I remember just laughing when she made the comment 35 years ago. Today while cleaning my garage, “I Want A New Drug” came on the radio and I suddenly stopped dead in my tracks. Is it a coincidence, or did I hear a guitar riff from “Purple Haze?” Can you please settle this old dispute?
Thanks for the great music!
DW- Waukesha, Wisconsin
Answer:
No coincidence. She’s right. Everyone was influenced by Jimi Hendrix. The guitar riff at the end of the solo is a conscious quote … a tip of the hat.

We made it up. In those days, the technology began to be important. So important that the producer would list the gear on the album credits. This was our little inside joke.

Question:
I’m curious as to how much influence the Dave Clark Five had on you? Your first album cover bore a resemblance to their first album cover, and over several albums they found room for a novelty or two on them like instrumentals. Similarly to you guys, you find room for awesome acapella tracks. I’m sure your influences are much more wide than this once great band now mostly unheard of, but your band reminds me so much of them. Otherwise, who were the biggest artists back in the day that you wanted to mimic or follow?
Chad – Molalla, OR
Answer:
Not all that much. I remember them, of course, but I was much more taken with the bluesy style of the early Rolling Stones.

Question:
Can you tell us a bit more about “Slammin’”? Was it a Tower Of Power idea? How did the people reacted to this song? I think it’s one of my favourite songs of yours. It shows that you and the boys have great skills. I think it should be played in the Jam scene as a classic nowadays.
Michele Krnjak from Italy (21 years old)
Answer:
We thought it’d be a cool idea to have an instrumental on the record. Very old school. So, we collectively wrote “Slammin’” …. My only regret is that we didn’t call it “49er Highlights”, because that’s really why it was written, and indeed where it got played.

Question:
Was the 10 bar verse/5 bar chorus in ‘New Drug’ a conscious decision to break from fours, or did the song just unfold that way in your head?
Thank you and please tell Bill Gibson I love his playing.
Tim Winters – Clarksville, TN
Answer:
Just unfolded that way. The whole thing was lyric driven so Chris and I just bent the music to suit the lyric.

Question:
With your experience in theater and the new musical “The Heart of Rock and Roll”, have you given any thought to writing music for theater in the future?
Marcie Collins
Answer:
Not specifically. But, we did write a new song for the musical, and I certainly wouldn’t rule out anything, as long as it’s creative. Theatre is really inspiring.

Question:
It looks like the bottom of your mic stand is a steering wheel. If so, what is the story behind it?
Chris Hawkins – Akron, Ohio
Answer:
It IS a steering wheel. The crew figured it out for me. It’s very light. I think they just soldered a titanium steering wheel to the mike stand. Usually the base is very heavy, but this is light.

Question:
I was wondering about the song “Forest for the Trees”. At the beginning of the song, the lyrics mention “it looks like life or death is your only choice.” The song is ultimately an uplifting one, but my question is if the song was written for someone you knew who was struggling or anyone needing a positive message? In other words, what was the impetus for this song? Thanks.
Heather O. – Fargo, N.D.
Answer:
Yes, the song was written for and about kids struggling with life issues. It was inspired by letters I received from different fans talking about how our music was important to them.

Question:
I would like to ask Huey what was the wildest or craziest movie role sent to him?
Lance Lumley

Too many, and too wild to mention. Remember, I come from San Francisco and have had all kinds of crazy independent roles offered to me.

Question:
I seem to recall reading about a solo album you were working on back in the nineties…I think a few songs written during that time eventually ended up with other artists. Am I imagining this or was there (at some point) a Huey Lewis solo album in the works?
Brian Courrejou
Answer:
Yes. We never finished it, but we poached a few things from it like “100 Years from Now”. There were a few songs that Chris and I wrote that I still think are really good, so maybe one day we’ll get some of that out there one way or another.

May 20, 2019
Question:
Can you recall a concert in maybe 1984 or so in the Columbus, GA (or Phenix City, AL) area where you opened for .38 Special? I know I didn’t dream it, but there is no record of this concert in any of the online historic concert/tour-date websites that I could find. I looked at lists of your concerts for the years 1982-1985 as well as those for .38 special, but apparently no one knows this concert took place (even though there are other listings for .38 Special with Huey Lewis in 1984 in other cities which I definitely didn’t go to). I know it could not have been before 1983 because that’s when I moved to Alabama. I clearly remember the concert, so am I crazy or what? I’ve been able to confirm every other concert I ever went to except for this one. Can you help? Does anybody else remember this?
Mark
Answer:
Mark, your memory is clearly way better than mine. Honestly, I can’t remember. But, I’m sure you’re not crazy. Does that help?

May 13, 2019
Question:
Why was the song “So Little Kindness” included on both Time Flies and Plan B? Was it re-recorded for Plan B and if so, why?
Jen Bosley – Philadelphia PA
Answer:
We liked the song a lot, and felt that nobody really heard it on Time Flies, and it belonged stylistically on Plan B. Also, I think we played it a little better after having been playing it on the road.

Question:
I recently picked up a copy of Collected on cd and have been listening to it constantly! I love signing karaoke and have sang most of your available song in the last few weeks. I’d like to learn your harp solos too but I can’t identify which keys you are playing, can you tell me what key harps you are playing on Bad Is Bad and The Heart of Rock & Roll? And if you would, list what other keys you are playing on other songs.
Robert Zelmore, Renfrew, PA
Answer:
Bad is Bad is in A, and I play a D harmonica, and HRR is in C, and I play an F harmonica.

Question:
I remember you covering Hank Williams’ Honky Tonk Blues for the Sports LP. I was wondering how much influence did old Hank have on you as a singer/songwriter?
Ervin
Answer:
Surprisingly, quite a bit. Before I joined Clover in 1971 or 1972, I lived with a friend in Mill Valley, and we played Hank Sr. records all day long. I still love the immediacy of those recordings.

April 15, 2019
Question:
I really enjoy the Nick Lowe song “I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock ‘n Roll,” probably because you produced it and The News performed on it. Would you ever consider adding that to your concert play list or including it on an album?
Jean Edmonds, Overland Park, KS
Answer:
We’ve played it live many times (there’s a youtube of it somewhere from SLIM’S). I don’t think we’d record it because the Nick Lowe version is my idea of what the song should sound like, so I wouldn’t do anything different.

April 8, 2019
Question:
Huey saw you in Oshkosh on the 12th of July for the 5th time and it just keeps better and better. I read an article by Jimmy Kimmel that he went trout fishing with you and he said it one of the best times. My question is where do you trout fish and is that what you do to relax?
Len Yanda
Answer:
I live in Montana so I fish a lot there, but I’ll fly fish anywhere, and enjoy salt water fly fishing in places like the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas, I’m currently excited about a trip to New Zealand.

April 1, 2019
Question:
Hi Huey, I was having trouble getting my 9 month old daughter to sleep. I don’t know why it popped into my head but I played “Doin’ It All For My Baby” and she froze. I could tell she was listening. She slowly put her head down and went to sleep. Now every time she’s restless I put it on and she stares, relaxes and falls asleep. “Stuck with You” works great too. No other music does it and I’m sure it’s your voice. I just wanted to say a sincere thank you for sharing your unique gift. Amazing how we touch others we don’t know.
Jim, New Hampshire

Answer:
Very sweet. Thanks for sharing. And, yes, I do realize how lucky I’ve been to be able to be a part of so many lives and stories … it is the most wonderful part of my profession.

Question:
When I was stationed in Alameda and later when I lived in SF I made it a point to hang/play pool at the 2AM club whenever possible (Remember a bartender named Liz? She told me it was short for “Lizard”. Ha!) Something really obscure I’ve always been curious about: whose beat up Porsche convertible is that in the “I Want a New Drug” video? If so, any idea what became of it?
Pat
Answer:
Good question. I have no idea. I wanted the yellow Speedster to replicate the beginning of the Paul Newman movie “Harper,” but I don’t know where we got it, or where it is now.

March 4, 2019
Question:
Hey Huey! I saw you at the county fair in Ventura, CA last year and I have loved you and The News since I was young and first got a copy of “Picture This”. I was born 7 years after “ Hard at Play” to give you a time frame, the heart of rock n roll is still beatin’. My question is, do you find a lot of influence in the Beach Boys? The debut album has a reference to the surfer girl album cover and your harmonies sound very similar and I love it. Do you admire Brian Wilson?
Anonymous
Answer:
Yes. We love the Beach Boys, and greatly admire Brian Wilson … he wrote beautifully about his high school experiences, while in high school!
He is one of the greats, I believe, right up there in importance with Chuck Berry, Hendrix, Sly Stone, Bob Dylan.

Question:
Have you ever considered doing a version of the Tower of Power song “You’re Still a Young Man?” With some updating (albeit only slight?), it might sound quite grand!
Greg Littell

We played “Still a Young Man” many times onstage with the Tower horns …

February 18, 2019
Question:
Emilio Castillo credits you with rescuing his Tower Of Power band. What initiated your collaboration with him?
Cris Traywick – Richmond, VA
Answer:
We’ve always been huge Tower of Power fans. I first met Mimi and the horn section when they played on “Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do.” Then we toured together for a couple years, of course. They are an American treasure.

Question:
During your down time at home do you ever get the itch to go in town to the local bars or clubs and see local bands play or are you still too recognizable and get too much attention when you go out?
Bonnie – Clearwater, FL
Answer:
We used to do that quite often, and still do occasionally. Haven’t since my hearing problems, obviously, but would hope that I could again.

February 3, 2019
Question:
I read that you learned to fly fish from your dad. Growing up in a tiny little town on the Arkansas River in the beautiful Colorado mountains, I did as well; learning the virtue of patience with a couple feet of fishing line attached to the end of a willow stick. Daddy’s little girl bringing in the brookies! Now that I have graduated into a real rod (at 46), I am wanting to take my dad to one of the beautiful rivers in Montana for a memorable fishing adventure. Where would you recommend we go? Also, have you ever fished the Arkansas in Colorado? The caddis hatch is so fun! I wonder how “Huey’s down wing” would do!
Johnna Foster – Howard, Colorado
Answer:
Pretty hard to beat the Missouri River (in Montana), which would be my first choice, because it’s very reliable. The Madison, Henry’s Fork of the Snake, the Clark Fork, and the Bitterroot are all great rivers at different times. Conditions matter, of course. I recommend contacting any fly shop and inquire. Hire a guide at least for your first trip to learn the ropes. Have fun.

January 28, 2019
Question:
I have seen you guys several times in concert. I can’t explain just what your music has meant to me over the years. I have always thought “Better Be True” should have been the second single from Small World. Is there any song you believe should have been a single for radio but the record company released other tunes instead?
Brent Scott
Answer:
Not really. The second single from PICTURE THIS should have been WORKING FOR A LIVING, and not HOPE YOU LOVE ME LIKE YOU SAY YOU DO, and the order of some of the later releases might have been better, but I’ve never been one who could determine which song is better for radio.

January 21, 2019
Question:
Is anything true about your family ancestors and the invention of the shopping cart? I guess I heard Casey Kasem told some story on that on his show while playing your hit as an extra some ten years ago.
Robert
Answer:
No, and I don’t really know where that came from.

January 14, 2019
Question:
I went back to watching old videos and was wondering if you all miss the MTV video days? I’m sure it added a lot of extra work on you all, but it had to kind of be some fun and help get your music out, cuz you all did some great videos. Did you enjoy it? Miss it?
Bonnie Stryzak
Answer:
I always felt like it was a shame to have to retell a story that you’d already told in song. Always felt like in the same way that a good book is always better than the movie, a good song is always better than the video. Having said that, once we decided to simply ignore the song’s story and just goof off, I must admit that we had a lot of laughs making them.

January 7, 2019
Question:
I’ve attended so many of your shows over the years and they just keep getting better. You had Paul Thorn open for you at Humphrey’s by the Bay in 2007 and I’ve seen him now several times. Are there any plans of recording/touring with the Paul Thorn band again?
Dave Firnkoess – Grand Terrace, CA
Answer:
No plans as yet because I can’t hear enough to sing, so we have no gigs booked. I hope I can get better, and then would love to work with Paul again. We love him.

Question:
I just read that you scored a perfect 800 on your math SAT and that you were in an Engineering program at Cornell for a couple of years. How did your parents feel about your decision to change direction and follow a different path? Hindsight proves that you were brilliant in your choice, but at the time it could have been scary for them. Were they supportive?
Tracy
Answer:
They were both very supportive. Both my parents were bohemian influenced and eager to support whatever I did. My father even insisted that I “bum around Europe” before college, which was where I began to play harmonica for survival, busking throughout the Continent and North Africa.

December 24, 2018
Question:
I attended Marin Catholic High School from 1970 to 1974, and the band Clover used to play at our dances. They played at my Junior Prom which was held at the Mill Valley Rec Center (I grew up in Mill Valley). It was my understanding at the time that Huey and/or other members of the group were attending College of Marin at the time. Is this correct?
-Anne Boessenecker Alley
Answer:
I never attended College of Marin, and I don’t believe any of the Clover guys did either. We certainly played there a couple of times, but that’s all.

I’ve been a devoted fan since I was 13 and have seen you in concert more times than I can count. I simply adore you. I used to love watching music videos as a teenager and I wondered which was your favourite and least favourite videos to make?
Dawn – Ontario, Canada
Answer:
Thanks. Very sweet. I think my favorite video was probably PERFECT WORLD, because it was one location, fairly easy to shoot, and was a creative idea. The least favorite was probably DOIN IT ALL FOR MY BABY because of all the make up and the three days it took to shoot everything.

Last week I heard Steven VanZandt (Little Steven) call Huey Lewis and the News one of the Godfathers of the “Bar Band Sound.” What do you think of his assertion and what other bands would you put in that category?

Question:
In 2001, When I was taking my defensive driving course (before getting my driver’s license), they had us watch this video about safe driving, and the entire soundtrack of this cheaply made video was Huey Lewis & The News songs. It must have been made around 1983-1984 because the songs were only from Picture This, and Sports. I’ve been looking all over for this video, and I can’t locate it. Any chance you know the title?
John Licari
Answer:
No, but if you find a copy, I’d love to see it! They must owe me some royalties!

I have several rods, but my go to is a Sage XP 5 weight (9’)… and I have to say my favorite river in Montana is the Bitterroot since it’s my home river.

Question:
Do you remember where you were the very first time you heard one of your songs on the radio? And, which song was it? I’m sure it must have been thrilling!
Amy Dumond – Sacramento, CA

Yes. We got word that KFRC had added our first single “Do You Believe In Love” and would play it Tuesday between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. We gathered at my house in Larkspur and at about 3:00 PM heard it on the radio … it was surreal, because it seemed to be played and sung by someone else … but, it sounded great on the radio and I felt it was going to be a hit.

Question:
I love the live version of “Trouble in Paradise” from your 2006 greatest hits album! Definitely one of my favorite songs! I can’t for the life of me figure out the name of the place referenced in the second line of the second verse. I’ve heard another live version where you reference Uncle Charlie’s but this one is definitely not the same. Did you change this line depending on where you were performing or did you just make up different lyrics to have fun with it?
Sincerely,
Wesley Eudy – Concord, NC
Answer:
Yes, I changed the line depending on where I was playing … here, I probably said “down at the Kabuki.”

We are selective about that, to be sure, but we have allowed our music to be exploited commercially when it makes sense artistically.

Do you remember where you were the very first time you heard one of your songs on the radio? And, which song was it? I’m sure it must have been thrilling!
Amy Dumond – Sacramento, CA

Yes. We were all gathered at my house in Larkspur Canyon. We were told that KFRC had added our record and would play it between 2:00 and 6:00 PM. They played it about 3:15 as I recall, and it was surreal. It didn’t even sound like us, and yet I knew it was going to be a hit. And, this is a record that we had produced ourselves, worked on and listened to hundreds of times … weird.

May 14, 2018

Question:
In the early 80’s I went to the Great America Theme Park in Santa Clara. I recall entering the park and being wrist-banded and informed that we were selected to attend, for free, a super secret concert by an unnamed band if we dared, at like, 7PM that very night. We dared and quite frankly were absolutely blown away by you guys, in a good way. I remember being told not to cuss or throw things at you (as was the custom of the day) because you dudes were maybe going to use some footage for a MTV video. Is my foggy memory accurate? Was that super secret free non-violent footage used for the “Power of Love” video?
Mark Padilla – SF, CA

Answer:
I remember playing there and filming it for something, but it wasn’t the Power of Love video … I don’t think it was a video at all, maybe a performance piece.

Question:
So just a few months back I got into Huey Lewis and the News, thanks to my dad, and since then I’ve been in love with your songs! I’m only 14 but ever since I started listening to you guys I’ve been inspired to possibly start a band of my own in the near future and maybe even choose that as my career in life. As you know, the music industry nowadays is suuuuper tough to get into. What kept you motivated to stay with your dream of being a performer when you were younger even if a part of you kind of felt like nothing might ever happen? Did anyone inspire you??
– Devyn Blake

Answer:
It is a tough business, so unless it’s all you want to do, you may as well try something else. But, if like me, it’s all you want to do, then listen to everybody, and then listen to yourself only, and good luck.

April 23, 2018

Phil was the best rock performer I ever saw. I learned so much from him. Also, he was a wonderfully generous person, and a good friend. He influenced so many of today’s rock musicians. He should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I just wanted to thank you for introducing me to the music of Paul Thorn. I saw him open for you at Humphrey’s in San Diego in 2007. I make sure I see both you and Paul at least once a year. Dave – Grand Terrace, CA

Answer:
I love Paul Thorn. And, I love his band as well. We haven’t played “BUZZ” in a while, but it’s a good idea, and I’m thinking we should throw it back in. Thanks for the reminder.

Good question. I’m not sure. There are certainly some very talented singers and people out there, but so much of popular music is in the writing, and I suppose that becomes obvious eventually. To be fair, I’ve never watched an episode of those variety shows, only seen trailers and ads, so I should probably withhold judgement.

Question:
Huge fan of yours from Denmark. Saw you on Waldbuhne, Berlin first time in 1986.
Later on in the beginning 90s i saw an interview with you on a Danish channel. You had a discussion with the interviewer that in some concerts once in a while you get into a sort of mental phase where it seems as if “time stops and everything flows perfectly.” This, as I remember the interview, is the best moment and why you love doing concerts. My question is, do you still experience these phases and how often do they happen?
Jens Laursen – Denmark
Answer:
Yes, every night … sometimes more than others, depending on sound and bio-rhythms (!), but that’s the object. Almost as if the song begins to play and sing itself.

Just watched your show at Rock the Park in London, ON. You and the guys were totally awesome! Yes, some songs are more challenging, but we get paid to sing them!

Question:
If it weren’t for my early exposure to your music, I probably would never have become a musician, or a music teacher. That being said, I would like to know about the News’ writing process. What is a typical method or series of events in the development of a song? Do you record a lot of demos? How critical are you in the early stages of writing a song?
John Licari
Answer:
There really is no one way … usually we’ll have a lyric idea and then look for a rhythm and melody for the hook, and then flesh it out … sometimes, however, someone will come up with a nice melody and chord progression and we’ll write words to it … typically, I’ll write the lyrics and one or several of the boys will write the music, but we all chip in at every stage.

Yes. He plays with the Doobie Brothers, and they are friends of ours. When we work together he sits in. He’s a wonderful player.

You are correct, but I didn’t start Slippery Elm … Peter Grenfell started the band with Bill Benson and Stuart Krasnoff, and I just joined.

Both. I vaguely remember that too. The excessive pot smoking may be the reason you/I can’t remember.

Question:
Although you are still turning out some great music and I remain a huge fan – you had such a run at top 10 hits and then, as with some other bands – kind of fade away from the hit chart. I’ve always been curious – did the song writing team break up? Record label / management problems – or writers block or none of my business??!! I’ll regardless – keep playing that rock n roll! And if you’re ever in the neighbourhood – drop in for a cold Moosehead!

Good question. A little writer’s block, family, touring … life. BUT, we have several (yes, several) new songs in production, and I think they are really good!

April 18, 2016
Question:
In a recent Boston Globe article, “Huey Lewis and The News Takes Its Classic for Another Spin,” you mention that when ‘Sports’ came out, it was a collection of hits that worked well for CHR [Contemporary Hit Radio] at a time when AM/FM was the only avenue to success. Back then,”You needed a hit record, period.” When asked if you are working on a new album today, you said:
“…Do you need 12 songs? Do we need an EP? Twelve is awful tough. What I think you do is you record a song and you film yourself doing it and put it on YouTube. You don’t need a record today, you need a YouTube clip.” Rethinking the “hit record” paradigm, where do you see the avenue(s) to success for today’s musicians? I’m interested to see hear a legend’s perspective.

I think nowadays, in a social media world, there are unlimited avenues to success … that’s maybe part of the problem … trying to be heard and seen is more difficult than ever.

Traci Odom – Anchorage, AK
Answer:
Lack of humidity is definitely tough on the voice … I take steam baths (in a steam room) rather regularly … 20 minutes in a steam room, and a couple hours of voice rest (quiet), can do wonders.

In the movie, American Psycho, what did Huey and the Band feel about Bateman’s extolling the facets of “Hip To be Square” while he gave Paul the axe (literally) ?
Joe Glim
Answer:
Fine. It’s really a long story about the film company who released a phony press release which said that I’d seen the movie, and it was so violent that we pulled our tune from the soundtrack … not true … there never was to be a soundtrack originally, and they were trying to gin up interest for the film on the eve of the release … that, but creatively, I’ve never had a problem with it.

December 14, 2016
Question:
I have a question about your scene from Back to the Future. During the band audition when you reject the Pinheads for being “too darn loud,” they play a bit of “Back in Time.” Of course the irony is that’s it’s your band playing, but the sound has an edgier feel and the lead guitar part mimicked by Marty McFly sounds nothing like the playing of Chris Hayes. So, is this a rough mix of the studio version you released and did Chris play special overdubs to sound more like McFly’s hero-Eddie Van Halen?
Ted C. – Jacksonville
Answer:
I think they used a Demo of “Power of Love” and then played over-the-top guitar all over it … I don’t know who they used to play it … probably a session guy.
(Jacksonville–see ya Dec 8th)

Whatever you did, it was awesome and one of my top five sought after guitar sounds.
Jess
Answer:
Well, we did lots of things … yes, most of the guitars are strats, but we used Les Pauls also, and a variety of amps … usually old Fender tube amps, but not always, depending on what we were going for.

I wonder what you think about the movie now, whether you remember it with nostalgia or – something else. Most importantly, when was the last time you or your family watched it? Cheers!

I’m a fan of yours and I loved your performance in the movie “Duets.” I loved all of all of the songs especially “Cruisin” with you and Gwyneth Paltro at the end. Would you ever invite her to sing with you on an upcoming album (that will give you a hint at my age LOL). And is she a naturally gifted singer as she appears to be? You both made that song sound so easy to sing and its not!!!
Paul Yakubov – Aurora, OH

Thanks. Gwenyth is extremely talented, and sings beautifully … when you see her, please invite her to sing on our new record.

Question:
I have always been curious why Bill Gibson does not appear in the music video for “Bad is Bad.” Does it have anything to do with the fact that song features a drum machine, or is it just coincidence your drummer is not in that video? Best of luck on the upcoming tour. The first rock concert I ever attended was seeing you guys back in ’86 in Portland, Oregon, when I was 14. I’m thrilled to be seeing you again in the same city this summer.
Nathan Holden
Answer:
The truth is, Bill was sick, but we always felt like it was the machine that caused his illness.

Question:
Hey, Huey. Huge, longtime fan here. Sports was the very first album I bought for myself – I was 12 years old and my mom let me pick out an album at K-Mart as a reward for straight As. I went to the concert in 1984 – my first – and I was hooked. I’ve seen you countless times since and always enjoy the show. Two questions: 1) Any chance you’ll be doing the anniversary Sports tour with the original HLN lineup, including Chris Hayes and Mario Cipollina? 2) Did you ever think, when you guys were playing Marin County clubs back in the day, that someday you’d be doing a 30th anniversary tour for one of the best albums of the 80s?
Tiffany Hauck, Denver, CO
Answer:
We already did a 30th Anniversary Tour … Chris sat in with us in Oregon, and it was tremendously fun. And, no, never thought about 30 years in the future … in fact, I never thought about 30 days in the future.

I just had a question about the location of where you filmed the Heart and Soul video. The end sequence looks like you’re walking down a street in Potrero Hill, is that correct? Silly question, I know, but I live in Potrero Hill and would love to find out.
Misha
Answer:
Exactly … we used Potrero Hill in at least three, and maybe more of our videos … it looks very “San Francisco”, and Lol lives right nearby.

Question:
As a bay area kid, I always knew when the Giants or 49ers were in the playoffs, you guys would be singing the hell out of the national anthem. It stinks now the TV networks use the anthem to promote their reality show contestants or judges. How much fun was it to be there on the side lines at all those big games at Candlestick? Are you going to perform an anthem at Levis Stadium?
Martin Feigen – Atlanta, GA
Answer:
The TV entertainment (and indeed the entire show) for the World Series, and the Super Bowl is determined by the networks, but the earlier play offs are usually handled by the teams … and, yes, the sidelines at Candlestick Park in the 80’s was a great place to be!

I once went onstage with reading glasses on, but I suppose that’s not too crazy …

1) Have you ever been in Mexico? Which part?
2) Have you ever considered to play in Mexico? You’ll be surprised of the thousands of fans you have in here.
Jorge Avila Andrade

It’s my golden pure voice!

Generally, the better the player, the less importance on the caddie, but caddies can offer the right advice at the right time, which can be very important … timing is everything.

Question:
Hey Huey, I love your records. My dad used to play it all day when I was a kid. My question is: Do you like to listen to The Beach Boys? Cause a lot of your songs have harmonies especially in “Stuck with You” and the guitar sounds like “Surf Rock” in some of your songs.
Javier Torres

Busted. Yeah, we love the Beach Boys, and Johnny (who does a lot of our vocal arranging) was very influenced by them).

August 18, 2014
Question:
We’ve been fans from the beginning and can’t seem to get enough of not only your music but also the tight bond of friendship that is unmistakable and shines through in all of your songs and performances. One thing that we’ve longed for all of this time, which we always look forward to when you perform live is the a cappella segment of your show. Have you any plans to release an all a cappella album? There’s certainly a market for it and I’m sure not only your long-time fans but quite a few new ones would go bonkers for such a set. Thank you for everything you’ve given us over the years, the cake already has icing. This would be the cherry on top.
Larry and Karen Baumann, San Jose, CA
Answer:
We’ve certainly thought about it for a long time, and may one day do it … right now we’re working on a couple new tunes for the band, but thanks for the encouragement.

Question:
Of all the movies and TV shows you’ve acted in, which was your favorite experience and why?

Probably the musical Chicago on Broadway because it was so challenging and immediate, but of the films, I’d say “Duets.”

August 4, 2014
Question:
I love your music and bought your album “Picture This” solely based on the album cover. I have been a huge Huey fan every since, and have seen you perform 7 times. My question to you is what is your favorite song you like to perform and why? I’ve raised my two young ladies on your music they too love your stuff.
Jeff Peters, Baltimore, MD
Answer:
I don’t have a favorite … I don’t allow myself to have one as it would be dangerous! I do always like the new stuff, however … so, generally my favorite is the newest one I guess.

July 28, 2014
Question:
I just caught your show at a corporate party. It was the fourth time I’ve seen HLN and you are still as good as you were in the 80’s. I really enjoyed the show (especially since I was standing at the front of the stage) but I have to say you didn’t sing a couple of my favorites like Bad is Bad, Stagger Lee, Mother in law, and You Left the Water Running. So my question is how do you decide what great songs to include for each show?
Julie Wagner, Springfield, MO
Answer:
I just make it up nightly … mind you, I’ve been doing it for a while, so I have certain patterns, but it really is just whim … I love all the tunes you mentioned, but at corporate parties especially, many people are seeing us for the first time, and want to hear the hits.

July 21, 2014
Question:
The 1st album my parents ever let me purchase was ‘Sports’ on cassette when I was 7 and have been a huge fan ever since. My question is, at the 3 concerts I’ve attended of yours (and on greatest hits albums etc.) Why is Hard at Play overlooked. I love so many songs on that album! Thanks for all the great music…please keep it coming!
Peter Martens, Lake Villa, IL
Answer:
I really wasn’t aware that Hard at Play was overlooked … we play “He Don’t Know” and “Build me Up” a lot, and have played “Time Ain’t Money”, and “Couple Days Off” occasionally … maybe it’s a case of “so many hits, so little time”!

July 14, 2014
Question:
I just came back from a Sci Fi convention in Texas where I got to meet several cast members of Back to the Future (Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, James Tolken and Claudia Wells). I got to thinking, “Where is Huey Lewis now and what is he up to?” So I guess my question to you is, do you have anything in the works for new material? For that matter, did you form any sort of continuing relationship with the actors of Back to the Future.
-Thomas Drusen, Oklahoma
Answer:
We’re working on something new right now … hopefully to be released in January. A lot of the BTTF crowd got together a few years ago in New York where we all did the TODAY show and a few others… had dinner with Michael, Christopher, Mary Steenburger, Bob Zemekis, and Bob Gale. I suspect there will be another event sometime in the future (pardon the pun) which will get us all together again.

July 7, 2014
Question:
First saw you in 1979 in small theatre in Oakland on New Years Eve. You opened for Pablo Cruise. Knew then you guys were going to be huge. Would love to have those shows on DVD.
Rick (from northern california)
Answer:
I don’t know. I don’t even know who owns those performances, but you have a good idea there…

I know you’re a big golf fan. I often see you at the Pebble Beach Pro Am. Being from San Diego, what is you favorite course to play here?

Question:
I have been a big fan of yours since I was a teenager. I only had the pleasure to see a concert once due to a 20 year career in the Navy, mostly overseas. My question is how much of yourself do you bring to your character in the show? Great character and great chemistry with the cast.
Jeff (Currently contracting in Kuwait)
Answer:
Great question. The answer is, I don’t really know … obviously it’s mostly me, but I certainly say and do some things while onstage, or on TV, that I wouldn’t in other circumstances, and I sometimes adopt certain characteristics to communicate a song, but ultimately, I suppose it’s me.

Hi Huey, I’ve been a huge fan since around 1986, and have enjoyed 5 of your shows in the western PA venues! I’m also a big baseball fan (Pirates) and know you are a Giants fan. Was music always the direction you planned to go in life or did you ever have the dream to pursue baseball? And who inspired you in either or both?
Dawn Dibert, Altoona PA
Answer:
I dreamed of being a Big League ballplayer… and then I turned 12. Inspired by Willie Mays and Ray Charles to name two.

Question:
The SFGate had an article regarding Jim Harbaugh’s comment that social media is an unnecessary “time drain”, however the players said its a fun way to connect with fans. I am curious to know if you and the other band members read questions and comments on your social media sites, and answer them yourselves… or do you hire a public relations person to handle that sort of thing?
Donna Ellison – Fairfield, CA
Answer:
Both.

Question:
I wonder why a touring band like yours skips Europe over the last years. My first indoor concert ever was your small world tour in Brussels. I remember that gig like yesterday. For me it was the start of my long concert visitor list. I’ve seen two more Huey shows since then. I wonder if Europe is in the plans for 2013?
Marc
Answer:
It’s simply money … we can’t make as much in Europe, and it costs us more to get over there, and we have 25 mouths to feed … we’ve had some of our best shows, and most memorable times over there … the good news is that we are really going to try to tour a little over there in 2015 … maybe in early summer festival season … we’ll see.

April 20, 2014
Question:
I saw you in the film Duets and of course Back to the Future, but I wondered if you had been in any other films? And if acting was something you had thought about doing more of.
Jon – Sheffield, England
Answer:
Well, I really enjoy acting when it’s creative … fortunately, it’s a lark for me … I don’t have to make my living as an actor, and can therefore be picky about what I do … which means I don’t do very much, because the stuff I’d like to do (creative) always goes to veteran actors. But, when it’s challenging and creative, I’m happy to do it.

April 13, 2014
Question:
Hi Huey. I love your original music but think the Soulsville album is outstanding! Any plans to release another album with the same soul vibe? Also, I love the bluesier version of Bad Is Bad!

Thanks for the props … Soulsville was probably the easiest, and in some ways most fun record we’ve ever done … we’re working on original material right now, but who knows what the future holds … hey, we’re young!

Would you ever consider being a judge on The Voice or American Idol? It was great to see Nicholas on The Voice perform “The Power of Love” but nothing can beat the original! I think you would be awesome as a judge/coach.

Answer:
I can’t claim I’ve aspired to be on a TV Talent show, but I am in show business, and therefore will do almost anything for attention or money.

March 23, 2014
Question:
I have been a fan of yours since I was a little girl. Before my 5th birthday, I had heard the song “Doing it all for my Baby”. I apparently told my parents after listening to it that I like the song and then said “he is singing about his little girl!” That CD was my first ever CD and for the last 23 years, I have had that song played on my birthday morning! I love it! My question is, what was the inspiration for that song and how did it come about?
Emily McKenna – Phoenix, AZ
Answer:
That song was written by our friend Mike Duke… we originally recorded it with Mike singing in order to try to get a record deal for him… when we couldn’t get anywhere, we simply replaced his voice with mine and that became the record.

March 16, 2014
Question:
I am a long time fan who lives in Wright, Louisiana. My very first rock concert was on the Four Tour in Lafayette, LA and the ticket price was $16.99. My question is seeing how Sports is turning 30 this year do you see getting the original band together for a one time show? Is that even a possibility? Also will there ever be a remaster of Four!?
Troy J. Maturin
Answer:
There haven’t been any plans to get the original 6 HLNs together that I know of, but we are all still alive (rather remarkably, I suppose), so who knows. “Fore” turns 30 in 2015, and we’re thinking about that a little, although we are working on new stuff at the moment.

March 9, 2014
Question:
I have been a fan for years and always enjoyed the part in the show when you throw your harmonica in the air and someone catches it with a baseball mitt. Has that person ever dropped the “Fly Ball” if you will?
Terry Bauer
Answer:
Yes they have dropped the ball, and sometimes it’s been an error on the throw, to be honest.

March 2, 2014
Question:
During the early years, you used to often come out during a set and let loose on a long solo on the harmonica, and it was a thrill to see you rip it up, and then have the band kick it up! Seeing your musicianship on the instrument over the years, I’d like to ask: who were your ‘Harmonica’ influences as to the style/playing of the instrument…Toots Thielemans, The original “Harmonicats” players in great early B&W films, or others.
Bob Belliveau, Naples, FL
Answer:
My two biggest harmonica influences were Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson…

Question:
Hi Huey!
My name is Dan and in addition to being a huge fan of you and the News, I am also a mathematics teacher at a small high school in Wisconsin, where I teach advanced algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus. I once read that you achieved a perfect score in the math portion of the S.A.T. exam. Do you use any of your higher level math skills in the music industry? And is there any advice you would give to a college bound high school student? Thank you for your time, and keep rockin’!
Dan Hively
Answer:
While its true that I got 800’s on both my math boards (level 1 and level 2), I never use any of my math skills in the music industry, and my advice to any student is; quit school and start playing harmonica… Just kidding.

February 16, 2014
Question:
You guys covered “Feeling Alright” and knocked it out of the park. I think you could do the same or more with “Into The Mystic.” What are your thoughts on this?
Scott Moreland
Answer:
Thanks. Great song, and not a bad idea… thanks.

February 9, 2014
Question:
What are your thoughts on the recording process used today. Do you prefer vintage analog recording or a mixture of both digital and analog? Also, have you ever considered doing an album(cd) of jazz standards? (Cole Porter,Nat King Cole, Sinatra etc.) I think that would be very intriguing!
Dave N. – Altoona, Pa
Answer:
Although I like a live ambient sound, I’m not an analog snob. I prefer performances to be “captured” rather than created (piece by piece), and therefore am not a fan of heavily pro-tooled (what isn’t these days) “perfect” tracks, but there are no absolutes here, and no right or wrong … It’s all taste, and we could have a rather long discussion about where the “art” is in music these days. I, too, love jazz standards … seems like most of them have been done as well as they’re going to be done, so I have a creative problem with the idea of a jazz standard album as such … reeks too much of commercialism to me, although, I must admit it would be fun.

February 2, 2014
Question:
Hi Huey – Thank you for the sweet gems that make me as giddy as a teenager. Funny enough, even at 37, I still bust out in song and dance whenever your tune surprises me! I became a fan back in the early 80’s as I grew up in a small town outside of Chicago. 1985 was the year that blew my mind! I was 10 and not only did Back to the Future make its mark on the big screen, but “Power of Love” became my jam. Can you share some of the inspiration behind this tune that you think caused it to be such a great hit? Also, I was a big fan of the entire Sports album. “If This is It” was the track that got replayed in the tape deck for what I think you were trying to convey and that was for women to not be a tease. Even at a young age, it encouraged me to speak my mind and ask for what I wanted. Is this along the lines of what you were trying to convey?
Lisa Brin, Los Angeles, CA
Answer:
I wish I knew where the inspiration came from, cause I’d go there a lot more often… but, I love that we make you giddy…

Question:
I used to work at the Co-Op Health Food store in Corte Madera. The Basic Food Shop. A guy who used to deliver, I believe, Mystic Lake Yogurt, among other things, told me that he was leaving the delivery job and that his band was taking off. I believe he told me that his band’s name was: Huey Lewis and the News. The reason I remember this is because your band’s name wasn’t what I expected. In any case, I have always been curious about this question. Most people knew me and my partner Kevin at the store. By answering this question you can finally put this to rest for me.
Terry Brownlow
Answer:
That’s me… I was actually delivering Nancy’s Yogurt for Natural Foods Express which was a Natural Foods distribution company founded by my partner Gilbert Rosborne and myself to distribute Nancy’s from the Springfield Creamery in Oregon to the Bay Area health food stores. I’m proud to say we introduced Nancy’s to the Bay Area.

Richard Sackley – Palm Springs, CA

There never was a promo video of that song … maybe a live version somewhere, but I can’t even recall that. Thanks for remembering the song … we haven’t played it for a while … might have to throw it back in the show.

January 12, 2014
Question:
You have always been regarded as a unique a cappella sound, you know that. “It’s all right” is an under rated classic that to my amazement not that many people know. It would be great ( I think ) to take some songs not known for being a cappella and make them so. Kind of like acoustic versions played on “coffee house” on xm. Just an idea.
Stephen
Answer:
I don’t want to burst your bubble, but you’re not the first to suggest that. Thanks, anyway!

There are a number videos and of groups that sing it, but none of them are YOU GUYS… I caught you in (near) Yuma, Arizona in 2010 and loved your acapella tunes, but was a bit bummed that you didn’t perform Naturally. Thanks. I think my voice has gotten a little stronger also, but that’s because we’ve worked so much … I probably have lost a little on the high end (notes up there are a little tougher than they were), but I’m smarter, and I think choose my notes better … that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

Question:
I’ve always really liked your music style. It’s very unique sounding and pleasant to listen to. You’ve always been classified as rock, but you really don’t sound like any other rock group from the 80’s. Some of the music did sound like rock, there was a little pop, and quite a bit sounded like Jazz. Particularly your “Four Chords and Several Years Ago” album had a lot of jazz if I remember correctly. So, specifically, what would you classify your genre as? Beyond simply “Rock.”
Tristan Perry – Frankfort, Kentucky
Answer:
Very observant… fortunately, I don’t have to “classify” my music. That’s someone else’s job, and frankly I enjoy the fact that it’s hard to classify… Duke Ellington famously said; “there’s only two kinds of music, good and bad.”

Question:
Hey Huey, have you ever written a lyric that you thought you’d never top, and then top it? And what were the lines? You even have great one liners in your interviews.
-Donny Abrams, Columbus, Ohio
Answer:
Modesty prevents me from answering your question truthfully…

Question:
I saw you and the News in Düsseldorf and at Rock am Ring 19… long time ago ? Amazing Shows. I hope, you will come to Germany again. That’s great, to have the chance, to ask you direktly. Please, I‘am sorry about my bad english, so, please have a little smile für it. My Band and me (www.cold-sweat.de) are going to play your song “The Heart of rock and roll“. I try to play the Harp Solo. We play the song in C. What kind of Bluesharp (Hohner?) did you play for this solo, and in which Key is the Harp? Thanks für your answer. I hope to see you in Germany again.
Christian Wissing
Answer:
I play a Dannecker Optimus diatonic blues harp (he makes them special for me, and they’re the best), in the key of F … the song is in C … that’s called “2nd position” harp.

Question:
I am a big fan of music and like the Rhythm and Beat to music, but like the words that flow with the music. What inspires you to write music? Are you still inspired after all these years? If so, when will there be some new music? I really enjoy and have enjoyed your music since the early 80’s.
Pete Lust
Answer:
We’ve just written, and are performing a brand new song called “While We’re Young” … should have another one within the decade.

Question:
I am 27 and I am a huge fan of you guys. You are a main influence on me playing the harmonica. My first concert was when 4 Chords and Several Years Ago came out and you played the Concord Pavillion. I have seen you whenever you have played the bay area. My question is: Have you and the band ever thought about putting a blues album out? You are great at the harmonica and you have a great band.
Michael Ingram – Fairfield, CA
Answer:
Well, you’re not the first to suggest such an album, and we/I might do it one day… sure would be fun. We’re headed to some contemporary ground right now with our latest new song, but who knows what the future brings.

October 27, 2013
Question:
Slammin’ is one of my all time favorite songs! I have two sons who play in High School Jazz Band and I would love to hear them play this song one day. However, I have been unable to find a Jazz Sheet Music copy. Is there one such available? Might you know where I could purchase? Now, for the real question… How did you learn to play the harmonica so darn well? Did you get lessons from somebody or are you “self taught”?
Tom Greenwood
Answer:
I’m sure there’s a horn chart for “Slammin’”, and Johnny would know, but don’t know if there’s a lead sheet for the tune or not … It was on the Fore album, and I remember a music book of that record, but don’t know where one might be … as for the harmonica, I’m mostly self-taught, but there’ve been a number of guys who influenced me.

Question:
We love your music but we also loved seeing you in Duets with Gwyneth Paltrow. Any chance of you doing any more movies?

Question:
My two favorite YouTube videos are you performing with the San Francisco 49ers football team doing “I know What I like” and “Hip to be Square” live in 1987. I know the team won the Super Bowl in January, 1988. How many times did you perform with team members of the championship 49ers? Must have been a great experience. Also, do you ever perform “I Know What I Like” (my favorite) in concert anymore?
Thanks!
Rocky Salperto – Orange, CT
Answer:
We probably did that with the 49ers a few times… we also had the whole crew do it with us on tour for a year or so, and they would drag all kinds of guests on stage for “Hip”… and yes, we do “I know what I like” occasionally… remind us when we’re in your neck of the woods, and we’ll do it for you.

October 6, 2013
Question:
Hello Huey and the News! I have a relatively straightforward question for you guys. Have you ever (or would you ever) considered doing a Christmas album!? I was talking with some people at work the other day, and we ran across the idea of a Huey Lewis and the News Christmas album and got SO excited about it, that I had to ask you guys SOMEhow! We found “Winter Wonderland” from the 2009 compilation CD you did, and it’s GREAT but I can’t help but wonder if you’ll ever do a Christmas album!? I love you guys!
Sara Moe
Answer:
We have definitely thought about a Xmas album… might even do one, one day.

Question:
I’m 15 and from the United Kingdom. I’m a HUGE HLN fan. I love how you guys always looked like you were having a lot of fun with your music videos and I never get tired of watching them. Another thing I like is how your songs seem very personal, like you believe what you’re singing, and the listener can relate to them. So my questions are: Did you guys like making videos and when you guys write songs, are they from personal experiences?
Clare Hopps – United Kingdom
Answer:
You’re right on both counts … we had a lot of fun and laughed a lot making the videos, and most of the songs were inspired by personal stuff, and then embellished.

September 22, 2013
Question:
I’m 21 and I grew up with your music, which is for me an eternal source of inspiration and hope. Your songs remind me of a time I really wish I had known, but it’s unfortunately not the case. I’m from France and I pretty much have the same vision of America than all the Europeans, that is to say the land of freedom etc. If you don’t mind me asking, what is your vision of America nowadays and do you think it changed since you started singing?
Alexandra Zaika
Answer:
Well, that’s a big question, but I have definitely given it some thought being that I’ve been abroad so much, and I have a few favorite sayings:”America is the best and the worst of everything at once,” and “What’s good and bad about America, is that people will do anything for a buck (money), and what’s good and bad about Europe is that people WON’T do anything for a buck” … and the two things are just different.

Question:
I live in the uk, im 45yrs old and have been a fan since way back and have been watching you play the harmonica on a few uk shows. I can’t play the harmonica, but listening to you got me thinking, and I’m going to give it a go, the song “Whole Lotta Lovin” where you play the harmonica, which one is it and what key is it in? I’d love to be able to play that. Or am I dreaming as I don’t have any song sheets?
Phil Cox, United Kingdom
Answer:
Good for you. “Whole Lotta Lovin’” is in the key of E, which means I use an A harmonica (I play a Dannecker harmonica made right there in the UK) … good luck.

September 8, 2013
I know you’re a pretty good golfer and I imagine you get to play some when you’re on the road. How would you describe your overall golf game and if you had a choice, would you rather have been a pro golfer or a singer in a rock band?
Tom Hauryski – Campbell, New York
Answer:
I’m a 7.1 index… that’s probably just a little better than average… I try to remember to enjoy myself. I’d rather be a film actor, but I prefer singing to playing golf!

Question:
In the video for “Heart and Soul” and “If This Is It,” a pretty blonde plays your love interest. They look similar. Did one actress play both parts, and if so, who was she ??? I’m just dying to know, and you were wonderful in “Hot in Cleveland.” I hope you will be returning for more episodes.
Sheryl Chalkley
Answer:
The gal in “Heart and Soul” is Signey Coleman and she’s also in “New Drug” … the gal in “If This Is It” was only in that one, and her name is Janet Cross. Hot in Cleveland was a lot of fun.* editor’s note: see home page for interviews with the stars of “I Want a New Drug,” “Heart and Soul” and “If This Is It”!

Question:
My name is John and I currently live in Orlando, FL but I grew up in Sunnyvale, CA and have been a fan for 31 years now (YIKES!) Back in the mid 80’s you guys played a few songs at the Bay Area Music Awards. One of the songs was “You’re Still a Young Man,” originally by Tower of Power. The show was broadcast live in the Bay Area and I was lucky enough to record your set on tape. Sadly that tape has worn out beyond all recognition. Any chance you may have a copy of the performance and can post it on your site or on youtube? I’m sure everyone would love to hear this rare gem! Thanks for DECADES of entertainment. Keep on Rockin’!
Answer:
I’m afraid I don’t have a tape of that, nor do I know where one is… sorry.

August 11, 2013
Question:
I am a huge fan and have seen more than a dozen shows dating back to the mid 80’s, all of which were great and you appear to never be faking your enjoyment for entertaining. Do you have a favorite city or venue that you particulary enjoy, be it for the food, golf or the fans?
Chris Fraker – Nashville, TN
Answer:
Not really … always like New York City, and our hometown San Francisco, but the venue is always important as well.

Question:
Hi Mr. Lewis. I hope you will enjoy answering this question (or reading it). I have always enjoyed “Picture This” even more than “Sports” and “Fore” which if I am not mistaken sold even better than “Picture This” and were slicker as well. Some have offered me the opinion that “Picture This” is rougher and closer to the roots of R&B than Sports and Fore. Do you agree and did you find that the slicker albums were any more or less satisfying to make than Picture This?
Roger L
Answer:
I don’t know what “slick” is, so I guess I don’t agree… I think we just keep improving, and every album is better than the preceding one… that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Question:
I am a life-long 49ers fan… and a Huey Lewis/News fan. I’m sitting here on Sunday morning listening to the hype about several NFL teams and their Pepsi anthems. Instead of listening to Kellie Clarkson sing about the Cowboys, or Aerosmith sing about the Patriots… I think it would be a much better to be listening to Huey Lewis and the News sing about the SF FortyNiners! Just an idea…
Marijeanne Rende – Danville, CA
Answer:
Sing about the 49ers? I don’t get it.

June 22, 2013

Always been a big fan of yours and the NFL. My question is how did SF 49er greats Dwight Clark, Ronnie Lott & Joe Montana end up singing on some of your songs?
Dean Osborn – United Kingdom

Question:
Hi Huey, first off I would like to say that I really enjoy your music. I was recently deployed to Kosovo and I made a huge attempt at getting the coffee shop owners to play your music. They all seemed to like you. Well At least the ones with electricity did. Do you guys ever hit the USO tours or do any small gigs in weird countries? I’m know there are some Albanians in Kosovo sing about how every this is alright and wanting a new drug. Thanks for your time.
Matthew Douglas
Answer:
I love it … you can be head of HLN promotion for Kosovo! … We haven’t done any USO tours as such (unfortunately … never really been offered one that made sense), but we’ve played Camp Pendleton, and other functions for returning Vets … nice to know we’ve got fans like you.

Question:
I’m a 30 year fan that discovered the band through “Picture This” and I hail from Victoria, Australia. I was wondering as you mature what steps do you take to ensure you get the “work/life balance” right?
David Burt – Traralgon, Victoria Australia
Answer:
Excellent question … as of now we’ve sort of rededicated ourselves to the band …our kids have all pretty much grown up, and we’re starting to write some new material, and thinking of another record even … It is true, however, that the traveling is rough, but look what we get to do for a living!

Question:
My BF & I saw several of the concerts this year. Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, and Cleveland to name a few. Thanks for the recognition in Cleveland. We were glad to see how you guys keep changing the shows up, it is fun for us. Love that “Bluesy” sound of the harmonica, do you play any other instruments?

Question:
Hi Huey, without question you are my favourite artist of all-time.
Anyway, from all the way down here in Australia I must ask…Of all the songs over your fantastic career…Which one do you wish you had have made a video for? (that may have missed due to “non-single” potential). For me, its “The Only One”. Interested to hear your thoughts.
Peter Ham

Answer:
Thanks for the props… don’t know which songs would have made good videos, but I agree that “the Only One” is an inspired choice… good call.

May 6, 2013
Question:
Huey, I have been listening to you my whole life. I remember my first ever career cassette tape when I was a kid was Sports. I still have it. The music is perfect in that album. Lots of my friends sort of laugh at me because I always have Huey Lewis playing in my car. My question is this, two shows that I have been to I have been kicked out of for dancing. What is the deal with that? Both shows were in casinos and I get that you got to cater to where the money is, but how do people go to these shows and not get pumped? Is it expected to just sit in your seat and act proper at a Huey Lewis theatre show? I really love the music and just get too fired up sometimes. Am I wrong for being this pumped? Are the other fans listening to something that I don’t hear possibly?
Jackson

Answer:
I’m sorry about that, but some of the audience is as old as me(!), and need to sit down every so often… we try to strike a balance… usually requiring the audience to sit for half the show, and then allowing them to stand or dance after that, depending on the venue… sometimes, you need to dance in your mind! Sorry.

Question:
Thanks to my dad being very passionate about pop music in the ’80s, I fell in love with your music before the age of 10, and I continue to be a huge fan!!! My question is: do you feel that there is any musician/band out there currently that was influenced by Huey Lewis and the News?
Misti Simpson

Answer:
I hear from young singers and bands all the time about how they were influenced by our band … a surprising amount of male country artists today grew up listening to us and other rock groups.

April 22, 2013
Question:
I am one of your younger fans, growing up listening to your music with my family brings back many great memories, however some of my favorite songs weren’t played at your recent show in Moncton, New Brunswick. It was disappointing to not hear Hip to Be Square and Stuck With You. I understand you can’t sing them all but those are some of your greatest hits! Why deny your fans the chance to hear them live?!
Jenna Fawcett – Moncton NB’

Answer:
What can I say? So many hits, so little time … we play “Hip” and “Stuck” all the time … sorry we forgot them in Moncton … I promise to play them when we return.

April 15, 2013
Question:
We just got back from your concert at the Turning Stone in Verona, NY. It was incredible. My question is this: did you have technical difficulties with your ear monitor, or did you forget the words to Stuck with You? Either way, we still loved it! Sandi W. – Baldwinsville, NY

Answer:
I probably messed up the words, and pretended that something was wrong with my in-ears!

Question:
I’ve heard you say many times what a fan you are of Tower Of Power but have never heard the story of how they came to work with you guys. It must have been extremely exciting for you to have the horn section play on Picture This and be in the studio with them for the first time. What do you remember about those days and the beginning of that relationship?
Frank Schnyder

Answer:
While we were recording “Hope You Love Me” for our second album in San Francisco, Tower of Power were in another studio in the same building… ran into them in the hallways and asked them to play on “Hope”… that started a long and fabulous relationship that continues to this day…

Question:
My name is Patty and I have wonderful memories of a concert your band headlined with the Police. It was in 1982 or ‘83 and I was working on a cruise ship at the time. My sister, who lived in Vancouver, BC got tickets to the concert and my ship was in port for the night. What an exciting night! We went to a jazz/blues club in downtown Vancouver after the concert. Great music all night long. I have 3 questions….hope you won’t mind. The first is do you ever jam with local bands after a concert? My favorite song is “Heart and Soul.” What was your inspiration? Will you ever schedule a concert in Southwest Florida?
Patty Husen

Answer:
Yes we jam with local bands after the concert sometimes … not often, but if there’s a band in our hotel or on a day off, then we’re likely to get up …. we didn’t write “Heart and Soul” … it was written my Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn … and of course we’ll be in Southwest Florida … probably this year as part of our Sports 30th Anniversary Tour.

March 11, 2013
Question:
You and your band were my first musical obsession back in the day! I’m super excited to see you in concert here in Upstate, NY on November 4th (just 3 days after my birthday). I was born and raised in Maryland and was able to see you perform in Columbia, MD back in the 90s. At that concert, I sent some flowers backstage to you for your birthday and you send me a handwritten postcard expression of thanks. I’m still amazed and appreciative of your kind gesture! I now live in Ithaca, NY. I remember reading that you spent some time here while you were attending Cornell. What are your fondest memories about your time in Ithaca? Keep on rockin!! ?
Jennifer Kaiser, Ithaca, NY

Answer:
Yeah, I lived in Ithaca for a little over two years… attended Cornell for 5 minutes over that two year period… my favorite memories are musical, playing with my band Slippery Elm (we all recently got together at the Upstate gig), and hanging with the guys from King Harvest. I really loved the countryside in Ithaca also… it’s a beautiful place, and I loved my time there.

March 4, 2013
Question:
Long time fan of yours and and you have been in my “FANTASY FOURSOME” for some time. Too bad the weather has been so bad here recently, and the timing of your Concert tonight or I would have invited you down to the Highlands for a game. My question: where is your favorite place to play golf? (after Pebble Beach – that was the easy answer). Can’t wait to see you tonight in Sydney. I will drop a visor off for you!
– BH

Answer:
Well, there’s no such thing as a bad golf course, some are just better than others … And, you’re right, Pebble has got to be my favorite, although there are many just about as good.

I know many years back a show(s) with Tower of Power was planned for your 20th I believe. Live @ 25 happen and now we are celebrating 30 years of sports next year. Any plans to do something with TOP or their horn section?

Answer:
We don’t have any immediate plans to do anything with the TOP horns. We, of course, have our own great horn section, but love TOP and try to stay in touch with them and certainly would love to work with them again.

February 17, 2013
Question:
Hey Huey, what’s on your iPod or what music are you listening to these days? What current music do you like?
Laura Gironda

Answer:
I always like Hornsby and Donald Fagen, but recently, I dig Eric Lindell and Marc Broussard, and always play old Louis Armstrong, and great Sinatra/Basie stuff.

February 10, 2013
Question:
My question is…why do people sit down at your concerts? The last two concerts I’ve been to of yours, both this year, I have been told to sit down. I enjoy your concerts and music very much, and I like to stand up and dance and enjoy! I was at the Hampton Casino last night and had to get security because I wanted to stand and dance, like many others and was pretty much accosted by a man behind me. I’m wondering if you might tell people to get up and dance if that would make a difference? I’ve been a fan for 30 years, saw you at the Paradise Lounge in Boston back in the day, don’t want to stop dancing!
Gina Piantedosi – Westford MA

Answer:
I think people sit down at the concerts because, like me, their back hurts when they stand … I can relate! … We try to accommodate everyone in most venues, and their policies always vary, but at most venues, after 2/3 of the show (approx 60 minutes) the fans are allowed to stand up and dance … Some venues have designated dance areas I think.

Question:
I heard or read someplace that you were great in math and had a perfect math score on your SATs. Since I am a high school math teacher and a huge fan, I was wondering if this is true? By the way, I’ve seen you in concert 24 times.
Nancy Moreau – Seekonk, Ma
Answer:
Yes, it’s true I scored a perfect 800 on my math SAT and my advanced SAT (2, maybe?) … I’ll prove it … you’ve seen us in concert 3 times 2 cubed … 24 times.

Question:
As a fan, I sometimes have one of your songs pop into my head during the day or during a conversation. I was wondering if you have ever experienced the same thing with one of your songs. If so, is there one that seems to surface more often?
Michele Govea – Chicago, IL
Answer:Definitely and we kid each other about it … we joke that it’s especially bad form to be humming one’s own tune, but we work on them so much, it can’t be helped.

January 20, 2013
Question:
Who did you write the song “Stuck with you” about? With who are you happy to be stuck with, and are you still stuck with that same person?
Alfred – Netherlands
Answer:
None of your business!… But, I will tell you, that although my songs are often inspired by real things, in fact, usually inspired by real life, they aren’t always literal, and I always “embellish”… but, I will also reveal that the person who inspired “Stuck With You” didn’t really like the song all that much.

January 13, 2013
QUESTION:
Hey Huey! I know you like the Dannecker harmonicas. What model do you play? Any special kind of tuning? Any further information would be greatly appreciated. I play Hohner Special 20’s at the moment, but wouldn’t mind spending a few bucks to get a really good harp. Your sound is great live, it’s really loud and clear.
ANSWER:
Well, I love Dannecker harmonicas, and there’s simply no better harp for intonation, action, and tone … Tony makes them for me and I play the Optimus, although all his models are great … I think the Optimus has a brass reed plate, maybe … you can check him out at antonydannecker.com … if you play Special 20s you’ll really notice the difference especially when in the intonation, and durability.

QUESTION:
Have you ever produced, and recorded a song that you have regretted and would like to re-record in a different version? It seems I remember reading that you have, but of course the details are somewhere in the gray matter. Thanks.
Vanita Menapace – Mosquero, NM

ANSWER:
I will be honest and say that I wish I’d left Hip to be Square in the third person (“He used to be…) … it wasn’t intended to be an anthem for square people, and not everyone recognized the irony, shall we say.

QUESTION:
I would love to know what types of music you listen to, and if you have an all time favorite group?
Wendy Hotaling, Northville NY
ANSWER:
Seems like I mostly listen to music of friends or fellow musicians that gets sent to me, or our own stuff that we’re working on, but for pure pleasure, I tend to listen to jazz, or older popular stuff like Sinatra, or Louis Armstrong. And, I don’t really have one favorite group… I love the Neville Brothers, Tower of Power, Bruce Hornsby, Paul Thorn, just to name a few.

Are there any acts or artists from the 80s that you’re still close to or friendly with?
Bert Baron – WCTC Radio, New Brunswick, NJ
ANSWER:
Sure, mostly those that are still working who we’ll bump into at the hotel because they’ve either just worked the same venue, or are going to the next day… Doobies, Chicago, Beach Boys … oops, I guess they’re from the 60’s and 70’s.

QUESTION:
Which do you like better, performing in huge arenas or smaller, more intimate venues? Why? I saw you perform in 1985 in Chicago (Lawn section) and again 2012 in Lac Du Flambeau, WI at a casino. Both were totally incredible, but for me the smaller one was better because I was able to be in the front and see you guys close up.Lori Hext
ANSWER:
We prefer to play smaller venues generally because they are better sounding, more intimate and more “musical” … that being said, larger venues can be more rewarding financially, and in that case, I prefer the larger ones!!!!

QUESTION:
I’ve read that Jimmy Kimmel considers you and him friends. Do you remember the first time you had met him and can you name an occasion that helped build that friendship?
Greg Becker – Chicago, IL
ANSWER:
I first met Jimmy Kimmel at the Mountain Home Winery in Saratoga, Calif. when he came to our show … this was a few years before Jimmy Kimmel Live. He’s a fly fisherman, and he came to visit me in Montana (a couple times), and it was from there our friendship grew … I’ve stayed with him a few times in LA as well … he is really one of the most generous, real, down to earth people I’ve ever met. And of course he has great taste in music.

QUESTION:
I retired from the San Francisco Police Department back in January ’03, so I now have a little time to enjoy life. I was with friends up at South Shore in August, so we saw your show and thought it was great! When I was a rookie cop back in the mid-seventies, I worked a beat in lower pacific heights, which included a club at California & Divisadero which was called The Old Waldorf. I also lived in the neighborhood and would occasionally walk down to the Waldorf for a drink. I’m not sure if my memory serves me well, but I have a vague recollection of seeing you perform down at the waldorf. I’m now living in the Napa Valley where I have a small vineyard which keeps me occupied, but I often reflect on those early days in the City. Was it indeed Huey Lewis I saw at the Waldorf or is my mental clutch starting to slip a little?
George Gaskins – Napa, CA
ANSWER:
We did indeed play the Waldorf at least a couple times… once opening for Bram Tchaikovsky, and once headlining, and maybe even another time or two… at my age, the memory gets a little fuzzy!

QUESTION:
Did you choose to change your last name or did someone ask/demand that you change it? What’s that story? Love the song “Bad is Bad” from “Sports” and great that you all wrote it together! What was your inspiration to write it?
– Rhianna
ANSWER:
Huey Lewis was a nickname my first girlfriend’s father gave to me in my teen age years (It grew from “Huey Louie” to Huey “Lewis”) … with Clover in England we recorded a record with Twiggy when we first arrived, and being that I didn’t have a Green card (work permit), I adopted the name to be credited on the album. I honestly can’t remember the inspiration for “Bad is Bad” other than the linguistic puzzle that the word “bad” represents (good).

QUESTION:
Dear Mr. Lewis,Recently, I viewed a DVD of your band playing a concert in Germany. I noticed at the end of theconcert how you genuinely seemed to enjoy coming back to connect with the audience to playa couple of encores. I am a Special Education teacher, and I had wondered if you had everwanted to be a teacher? It was fun watching you and your band reach an audience in such anunselfish way. Your concert seemed like more of a “calling” than just a job.
Ann Kort – Marengo, Illinois
ANSWER:
Thank you for your nice comments … yes, I love what I do, and I also enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball for 6 years, which is teaching I suppose, although I’m not sure I totally get the connection … You are right, however, that playing music was, in fact, a “calling” for me, and I think it needs to be for anyone entering the business, because the odds of success are not high.

QUESTION:
In the past 50 years, I frequented my share of defunct Cleveland, OH clubs such as the Agora and Leo’s Casino, while having the privilege of watching the “Sam and Dave’s” of the world make their mark at these intimate venues. I see now your tours include theater and casino venues. I know touring is any entertainer’s “bread and butter” but do you feel the “mega stadium” concert is quickly becoming a thing of the past and what direction do you see touring going in the future?
– Diane Barski, Parma, OH
ANSWER:
It’s true the venues we play have definitely changed over the years… and as I often say, we used to be a beer and hot dog band, and now we’re hanging with the “wine and cheese set” … truthfully, the theaters provide a much more intimate, and musical experience, albeit a more expensive one, that people seem to really enjoy. I know we do.

QUESTION:
My name is Shen and I am a huge fan. I grew up in Lawrenceville, NJ and I have two sons, Mike and Sean. Mike graduated from The Lawrenceville School in 2008 and Sean is a third form day student there now. He is a member of the Hamill House. I am really looking forward to attending the Aldo Leopold Award Presentation this Thursday evening. After all these years I will finally get to see you in person! I am so excited!! I guess my question to you is: What was your most memorable experience at The Lawrenceville School? I wish you continued success in your career. I will always be a fan!
– Shen Cuskley
ANSWER:
My most memorable experience while at Lawrenceville might have been a concert I saw at Town Hall in New York while at L’ville … It was the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and they made a huge impression on me … It was 1966, and I was already playing harmonica … I think the seed (or one of them) of a music career was planted then.
